Ophelia (my\ndog\u2014yes, she\u2019s named after the character in <em>Hamlet<\/em>)\nand I have had many walks together since I adopted her as a two-year old from\nthe Humane Society.&nbsp; I\u2019m grateful to\nOphelia for all of these many, many walks because she affords me the\nopportunity to simply walk outside, attempt some quiet thoughtfulness, and simply\nbehold the beauty of Creation.&nbsp; I\u2019ve seen\nmany blooming flowers, fiery-colored trees, and snowflakes falling like\ncrystals because of her insistence upon taking a stroll morning, noon, and\/or\nnight.&nbsp; (I also chose my dissertation\ntopic and decided to start dating the friend who would become my husband while\nwalking Ophelia\u2014but these are stories for another time.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/KH-2-534x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44717\" width=\"294\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/KH-2-534x400.jpg 534w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/KH-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/KH-2-100x75.jpg 100w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/KH-2.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 294px) 100vw, 294px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This particular night, walking with my dog after Baby was in\nbed, I sighed a grateful breath for simply being outside in the night air.&nbsp; And, as it was too dark to observe flowers or\ntrees (and it certainly wasn\u2019t cold enough to snow), I looked up.&nbsp; My eyes widened as I saw a sight that I\nsimply NEVER see in my home city of Indianapolis:&nbsp; I saw stars.&nbsp;\nAnd these weren\u2019t just any stars\u2014I could see Pegasus and Andromeda, Draco,\nand Taurus.&nbsp; I think I even saw Mars.&nbsp; I was amazed.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/KH-1-1-592x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44718\" width=\"360\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/KH-1-1-592x400.jpg 592w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/KH-1-1-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/KH-1-1.jpg 712w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, I realize that some of you who live in more picturesque\nlocales may be smirking quietly at my city-girl surprise.&nbsp; But when is the last time you have had reason\nto look at the stars?&nbsp; For myself, I know\nthat, at quieter moments in my life, I found more time to sit or stand there\nlooking at the sky.&nbsp; I distinctly\nremember my little brother and I pressing our noses to the car window as our\nparents drove us home on county roads at night.&nbsp;\nWe spoke in hushed voices about the dark sky shot through with stars,\nand how, the longer we looked, the more stars emerged from the surrounding\nblackness.&nbsp; In the different places I\u2019ve\nlived and visited, I\u2019ve seen planets, shooting stars, and the glorious Milky\nWay.&nbsp; But, all these visions are dim\nmemories at present.&nbsp; In my fair city, it\nis, in fact, easier to make out the model of an airplane than it is to see Ursa\nMajor.&nbsp; There is too much electric buzz,\ntoo much flash, too much noise in my world for me to perceive any ancient\nworlds of light.&nbsp; In fact, I\u2019m fairly\ncertain that, if the Star of Bethlehem shone over Lucas Oil Stadium, I would\ncompletely miss it.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/KH-3-533x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44719\" width=\"363\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/KH-3-533x400.jpg 533w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/KH-3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/KH-3-100x75.jpg 100w, https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/KH-3.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what does dog walking and star gazing have to tell us\nabout Advent?&nbsp; My vision of the night sky\non that dark Advent night was a sign to me I\u2019m still trying to interpret\u2014something\nabout the gift of light, of resilience, of God\u2019s Peace and Hope which is\npresent all around us\u2026if we could only open our eyes to see it.&nbsp; The unseen stars of God are forgotten in the\nmidst of the noise, the busyness, the distractions, the hurt, and the\ndisappointments which crowd around our hearts and prevent them from hearing\nGod\u2019s word:&nbsp; Rejoice\u2014again I say to you\nrejoice, for today in the City of David, a savior has been born to you (Luke\n2:11).&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So take a walk some silent night this Christmas Season\u2014make\nroom for the brightness of God.&nbsp;
