Published by the Institute of Sacred Music, an ecumenical, interdisciplinary graduate center at Yale University, this publication serves a diverse readership that is interested sacred music, worship, and the related arts. Each issue is organized around a theme. The current issue centers on the Beatitudes.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d like to highlight some articles that may be of interest to the readers of Pray Tell.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, <a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/composing-the-hymn-for-the-holy-year-of-mercy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Paul Inwood<\/strong><\/a> has a fascinating piece on how his composition for the Year of Mercy came into being. You may remember that he won the Vatican-sponsored international competition. His composition was sung (and continues to be sung) worldwide. In this article, he shares the backstory on how this extraordinary experience unfolded. Be sure to click on the videos \u2013 one in Slovak, the other in Arabic \u2013 to see how beautifully and variously this hymn has been sung. Blessed are the merciful.<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s also an article on preaching that you won\u2019t want to miss. We had a bit of a crisis when one of our authors, who was writing on the beatitude \u201cBlessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,\u201d had to pull out at the last minute because of a health emergency. But every crisis is an opportunity and, in this case, a happy end resulted. We reprinted a classic that is now out of print: an essay entitled \u201cPreaching the Just Word,\u201d by <a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/preaching-just-the-word\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Walter Burghardt<\/strong><\/a>, SJ (d. 2011) \u2013 who is regarded as one of the best preachers of his era. He was a keen thinker and a fabulous writer too; his words just fly off the page. Be prepared for time travel (1979!), but the insights in this essay are not outdated. A bracing read.<\/li>\n<li>Another article I highly recommend is the piece on funerals. It is simply the best thing I\u2019ve read on this subject. <a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/the-christian-funeral-and-the-blessedness-of-mourning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Thomas Long<\/strong><\/a>, of Emory University, who wrote the book, <em>Accompany Them with Singing: The Christian Funeral<\/em>, explains the difference between grief and mourning and gives a stimulating account of why those who mourn are blessed. He also raises a much-needed critique of the rising practice of abandoning funerals altogether in favor of \u201ccelebrations of life.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Finally, I&#8217;d recommend a wonderful combination of religion, liturgy, music, and theology in &#8220;Climbing the Mountain of the Beatitudes.&#8221; This is admittedly a challenging read, but if you love Dante\u2019s Divine Comedy, do take a look at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/climbing-the-mountain-of-the-beatitudes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Peter Hawkins<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s brilliant essay on singing the Beatitudes in the Purgatorio. Peter, a renowned Dante scholar and professor of religion and literature at Yale, is retiring this year, so it\u2019s a special grace to have his voice in this issue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019ve highlighted these four, but there are many other treasures here as well. Methodist pastor <a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/living-as-sacramental-jars-of-clay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hyuk Seonwoo<\/strong><\/a> wrote a beautiful and moving essay about his Korean-American congregation\u2019s practice of celebrating weekly communion (something not common in his denomination). And U.C.C. pastor <a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/what-kind-of-righteousness-what-kind-of-blessing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Cheryl Cornish<\/strong> <\/a>has a profound reflection on the \u201cstrange promise of blessing\u201d for those who suffer persecution for the sake of righteousness.<\/p>\n<p>Blessings of animals, and the cultivation and blessing of community gardens, are examples that Methodist pastor <a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/the-meek-will-inherit-the-earth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Michelle Lewis<\/strong><\/a> brings to life in her essay on the meekness of creation. And Episcopal priest\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/poverty-of-spirit-and-the-spiritual-life-of-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Cathy George<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0reflects on the spiritual lives of children in an essay that will make your heart break and make you laugh out loud.<\/p>\n<p>An extract from the book-length poem <em>Beatitudes,<\/em> by acclaimed Canadian poet <a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/beatitudes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Herm\u00e9n\u00e9gilde Chiasson<\/strong><\/a> carries us in a postmodern direction<em>.<\/em> This poem has been described as \u201cboth a cry and a prayer.\u201d More essays about music can be found in this issue too too: one by musicologist\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/lessons-from-the-music-of-the-global-south\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Swee Hong Lim<\/strong><\/a> on what music from the global south\u2014particularly Africa\u2014can teach us; and one in which Mennonite musician\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/building-peace-through-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Benjamin Bergey<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0reflects on how we can build peace through music.<\/p>\n<p>Canon <a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/blessing-and-the-face-of-being\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Christopher Irvine<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0contributed a thought-provoking reflection on the human body as locus of living the Beatitudes, using as a point of reference the sculptures of Antony Gormley. <a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/places-to-mourn-for-those-who-have-lost-their-place\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Teresa Berger<\/strong><\/a>, who first wrote about the Trauerort at Pray Tell, expanded her reflection on these unique places to mourn. And of course our cover art\u2014which many of you will recognize\u2014is drawn from the gorgeous and unique <a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/the-beatitudes-illuminated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>St. John\u2019s Bible<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past year, the readership of <em>T<a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he Yale ISM Review<\/a><\/em> has doubled, which pleases me a lot (as our regular readers know, I&#8217;m the general editor of the Review).
