Praedicandi:<\/i> Ed Foley on the First Sunday of Advent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>First Sunday of Advent, Cycle C<br \/>\n<em>by Edward Foley, Capuchin<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the aftermath of midterm campaigning<br \/>\nand unending runoff elections<br \/>\nin an era of political divisions<br \/>\nand special prosecutors<br \/>\nin which the specter of corruption lurks<br \/>\nat virtually every corner of our government<\/p>\n<p>It might surprise some to learn<br \/>\nthroughout our national history<br \/>\nthere have been deeply religious people<br \/>\neven clergy!<br \/>\nwho have been elected to lead<\/p>\n<p>The first speaker of the house of representatives<br \/>\nFrederick Muhlenberg of Pennsylvania<br \/>\nwas a Lutheran Pastor \u2026<br \/>\nand almost 8% of the first congress were clergy<\/p>\n<p>One of the more interesting religious figures in our political history<br \/>\nwas Thomas Jefferson<br \/>\n3rd president of the U.S., Founder of the University of Virginia<\/p>\n<p>A polymath who designed classical buildings<br \/>\nread and wrote at least 6 languages<br \/>\nand was a noted horticulturalist<\/p>\n<p>Jefferson was also very interested in ethics<br \/>\nproducing his own bible, <em>The life and morals of Jesus of Nazareth<\/em>\u00a0 [1]<br \/>\nMaybe we should make it required reading<br \/>\nfor all Christian politicians today?<\/p>\n<p>While a deeply moral man, as a \u201cdeist\u201d<br \/>\nJefferson did not believe that God intervened in human history<br \/>\nso he designed his collection to highlight Jesus the moralist<br \/>\nwhom he great admired<\/p>\n<p>The result was an 84 page volume<br \/>\ncut and paste from select verses of the gospels<\/p>\n<p>Key to Jefferson\u2019s cutting and pasting<br \/>\nwas eliminating every miracle<br \/>\nand all other Jesus acts that could be considered<br \/>\nsupernatural \u2013 including the resurrection<br \/>\nJefferson\u2019s\u2019 bible has been described as<br \/>\n\u201cscripture by subtraction\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My excursion into Jefferson\u2019s cut and paste job on holy writ<br \/>\nwas prompted by my recent rereading of Mary Gordon\u2019s book<br \/>\n<em>Reading Jesus: A writer\u2019s encounter with the gospel<\/em>\u00a0[2]<\/p>\n<p>Dedicated to her son\u2014a seeker\u2014she divides the book in 2<br \/>\nfirst: NT passages that have been a source of hope<br \/>\nthen: what she calls \u201cthe problems of Jesus\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s in that second part, the problem section of the book<br \/>\nthat she tackles apocalypticism<br \/>\nor texts about final days<br \/>\nlike the ones that confronted us last Sunday<br \/>\nand the one\u2019s that accost us today<\/p>\n<p>In the midst of her contemplation<br \/>\nGordon muses aloud whether<br \/>\none should take a Jeffersonian approach to such texts<br \/>\nand simply cut them out of the bible<br \/>\nwhich means cutting them out of our lectionary<\/p>\n<p>For she is not sure about their value<br \/>\nor what virtues such texts nourish<br \/>\nor even what kind of God they reveal.<\/p>\n<p>From a preaching perspective<br \/>\non the one hand I instinctively agree with her<br \/>\nand my life as a preacher would be much easier<br \/>\nif I didn\u2019t have to brave such texts in the pulpit<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, Douglas\u2019 words throw down the gauntlet<br \/>\nto our lectionary \u2026 to our liturgy<br \/>\na challenge that I think we need to tackle<\/p>\n<p>And so the preaching quest before us is to discover<br \/>\nif these texts are intended to do anything more<br \/>\nthan vex the people of God and add<br \/>\nto our already personal and societal high anxiety levels<\/p>\n<p>Jesus, like John the Baptist<br \/>\nwho will make his advent entrance next week<br \/>\nand hold center stage for the 2nd and 3rd Sundays of Advent<br \/>\nwere both apocalyptic prophets<\/p>\n<p>That does not mean, however, that they were hell bent<br \/>\non predicting the end of the world<br \/>\nor were soothsayers<br \/>\nwho could have predicted<br \/>\nthe deadly paradise wild fires<br \/>\nthe crash of the Indonesian jet liner<br \/>\nor the recently earthquake in Alaska<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Jesus and John and prophets like them,<br \/>\nwere people of profound faith<br \/>\nbelieving in a God active in the midst of their struggles<br \/>\nand because of this faith they hoped<br \/>\nfor a profound and decisive change in their world<br \/>\nwhat the gospels identify as<br \/>\nthe very inbreaking of God\u2019s reign<\/p>\n<p>That abrupt change concerned not only the physical limitations<br \/>\nthat Luke enumerates earlier in his gospel<br \/>\nthe lame walking, lepers being cured<br \/>\nand the dead being raised to life<\/p>\n<p>but a reversal of injustice and prejudice<br \/>\na reversal of xenophobia and racism<br \/>\na reversal of the dark side of today\u2019s social order &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>reversals prophetically announced by Jeremiah, in our 1st reading<br \/>\nin the very renaming of Jerusalem<br \/>\nfrom City of Peace<br \/>\nto a place where God\u2019s Justice dwells<\/p>\n<p>In these days following the funeral of EJ Bradford<br \/>\nthe young black man<br \/>\nmistakenly killed by police in an Alabama mall<br \/>\nin these days<br \/>\nas the trial gets underway<br \/>\nof a self-professed neo-Nazi accused of<br \/>\nrunning his car into a crowd of folk<br \/>\nand killing counterprotester Heather Heyer<br \/>\nin these days after the killing of a black security guard<br \/>\nin Midlothian<br \/>\nand the surprising quick justification of that act<br \/>\nby Illinois state police<\/p>\n<p>there are similar calls in our own streets<br \/>\nfrom segments of the African American community<br \/>\nfrom those who oppose white supremacist politics<br \/>\nfor those fed up with the gun violence<br \/>\nthat peace cannot be purchased at any price<br \/>\nand every city of peace should first be a city of justice.<\/p>\n<p>But are such apocalyptic readings<br \/>\nin this adventing season<br \/>\nwhen we desperately await the inbreaking of God\u2019s reign<br \/>\ninto our own darkening and violent world<\/p>\n<p>are these readings only prompts to protest<br \/>\nprotests that sometimes themselves become excuses for violence<br \/>\nas is unfolding these days<br \/>\non the streets of Paris, the city of light?<\/p>\n<p>Or do they actually promote virtue<br \/>\nand provide some guidance<br \/>\nfor a Jesus path through these markedly difficult times?<\/p>\n<p>Part of that answer might be found<br \/>\nin the unusual design of today\u2019s Gospel<\/p>\n<p>for if we look closely at Luke 21<br \/>\nit actually narrates a partial reversal of the Genesis creation story<\/p>\n<p>The lamps that God hung in the sky to light the earth<br \/>\non the 4th day of creation in Genesis 1<br \/>\nthe sun and moon and stars<br \/>\nare now turning into cosmic distress signals<br \/>\nBut notice they are not being switched off<\/p>\n<p>because in this reverse creation story<br \/>\nGod is not abandoning the divine promise<br \/>\ngiven to Noah in Genesis 9<br \/>\nafter the earth was devastated by water<br \/>\nwhich God promised never to do again<br \/>\nwith the rainbow as a symbol of that promise<\/p>\n<p>God is not abandoning the divine covenant with humanity<\/p>\n<p>but in days of distress, for Luke\u2019s community and our own<br \/>\nGod is changing the covenantal symbol<br \/>\nfrom rainbow to redeemer<br \/>\nfrom water droplets to baptismal baths<br \/>\nfrom planets to people<\/p>\n<p>In the first creation stories God created order<br \/>\nout of the abyss, out of chaos<br \/>\nplanted a garden<br \/>\nbirthed the human family<br \/>\nand acknowledged all creation to be good<\/p>\n<p>But in these days<br \/>\nsuch apocalyptic readings remind us<br \/>\nthat humanity has upturned God\u2019s created order<br \/>\nthat in our violence and greed<br \/>\nwe have allowed the aboriginal chaos to return<br \/>\nthat in our racism and xenophobia<br \/>\nwe have created a new abyss<br \/>\nfor the outsider, for the stranger<br \/>\nand in our immigration policies<br \/>\nwe have too often sundered the human family<br \/>\nseparating parent from child<br \/>\nsibling from sibling<br \/>\nlover from loved<\/p>\n<p>Poet and Pastor, Erin Wathen<br \/>\noffers a poignant reflection on this creation reversal<br \/>\nframed through familiar carols and advent hymns<br \/>\nas she muses<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Who is it that we\u2019re looking for, when we sing<br \/>\naway in a manger, no crib for a bed \u2026<br \/>\nWho is that baby we think is coming<br \/>\nto sleep so soundly, so content in his poverty and Unbelonging?<\/p>\n<p>Who is that child who so unobtrusively slips into the night<br \/>\nso as not to disrupt our \u2026 Black Friday, or empire of greed<\/p>\n<p>Is the Empire that greets migrant children with<br \/>\na parade of guns and a cloud of tear gas<br \/>\nlike the march of Herod\u2019s troops<br \/>\nas they chase the unwelcome<br \/>\noff into the night,<br \/>\nsinging What Child is This?<\/p>\n<p>What child is this, indeed, who comes to find sanctuary<br \/>\nin a kingdom that fills its Decembers with<br \/>\nparades and presents, and elves on shelves leaving<br \/>\ntreats and mischief,<br \/>\nIt\u2019s all \u2026 so \u2026 Magical.<\/p>\n<p>But our O-so-Holy-night \u2026<br \/>\nOur \u2026Little Town of Bethlehem<br \/>\nstrikes a dissonant tone<\/p>\n<p>In a land that idolizes childhood<br \/>\nbut sometimes brutalizes even abuses children<\/p>\n<p>we sing of angel choirs,<br \/>\nas we chase children back into the unforgiving desert<\/p>\n<p>We are waiting for someone to save us from<br \/>\nthese winter frozen hearts \u2026<br \/>\n\u2026walls making prisoners of us all. [3]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>O come, O come Emmanuel we pray<br \/>\nbeseeching \u201cGod with us\u201d to save us from sin and despair<\/p>\n<p>But in this creation reversal<br \/>\nour apocalyptic texts turn the tables on us<br \/>\nas did the Christ with shocking regularity to his own disciples<br \/>\nwith the discomforting reminder<br \/>\nthat a saving God is not with us<br \/>\nunless we are with a God who loves and saves all\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Peace reigns when the baptized stand for justice<br \/>\nwhen we recognized that every newborn<br \/>\nevery infant lowly is an infant holy<br \/>\nthat unwed mothers can be handmaids of the Lord<br \/>\nand that homeless families can be holy families<\/p>\n<p>In this advent season we pray and sing about waiting on God<br \/>\nwhile apocalyptic texts remind us that God is waiting on us<br \/>\nIn the poignant words of Howard Thurman [4]<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>to find the lost,<br \/>\nto heal the broken,<br \/>\nto feed the hungry,<br \/>\nto release the prisoner,<br \/>\nto rebuild the nations,<br \/>\nto bring peace among the people,<br \/>\nto make music in the heart.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When we take up that adventing mission<br \/>\nthat apocalyptic challenge<br \/>\nthen we too will live in a city of justice<br \/>\nand Emmanuel, God with us, will be manifest to all<br \/>\nnot in twinkling lights<br \/>\nbut in enduring justice<br \/>\nthrough Christ our Lord<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Endnotes<br \/>\n[1]\u00a0Lanham: Dancing Unicorn Books, 2016.<\/p>\n<p>[2]\u00a0New York: Anchor Books, 2010.<\/p>\n<p>[3]\u00a0https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/irreverin\/2018\/11\/who-is-it-that-were-waiting-for\/ altered as noted through italics and \u2026<\/p>\n<p>[4]\u00a0From <em>Black Fire: African American Quakers on Spirituality and Human Rights<\/em>\u00b8 ed.
