in our House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In these last days of the liturgical year, our Sunday Gospels have reminded us of the wonder of simplicity : the budding leaves of a fig tree, the giving of two small coins, the loving of God and neighbor.\u00a0 These seemingly limited, small activities are extraordinary signs\u2014signs of the coming kingdom of God and our steadfast preparation for it.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been focusing a bit more upon that which is small with the help of one who is small who lives in my house.\u00a0 My daughter has turned one year old, and with the wisdom of one year she greets every corner of her world with joy and wonder.\u00a0 A teaspoon is a prized, technological marvel which she can grasp with her own small hand.\u00a0 An improvised I-IV-V blues chord progression on our living room piano is not only occasion for joyous \u201csinging\u201d (something like \u201cAaaaAaaaaAAA\u201d) but vigorous clapping.\u00a0 Dollies, stuffed animals, and real life children are all greeted with a delighted \u201cHi, Bebee!\u201d (Hi, Baby!) and, depending on how rambunctious we\u2019re feeling, a hug and a \u201ckiss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This greeting, \u201cHi, Bebee!\u201d in fact, has been extended beyond the three-dimensional world.\u00a0 We\u2019ve noticed her greeting faces in photographs and picture books with these same words of welcome.\u00a0 Yet, my daughter surprised me, a few days ago when, as I carried her through our kitchen, she called out, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/render.fineartamerica.com\/images\/rendered\/default\/print\/5.875\/8.000\/break\/images\/artworkimages\/medium\/1\/cristo-salvator-mundi-quentin-massys.jpg\" alt=\"Cristo Art Print featuring the painting Cristo Salvator Mundi by Quentin Massys\" width=\"354\" height=\"488\" \/>\u201cHi, Bebee!\u201d\u00a0 I looked to where she was pointing, and was surprised to see her staring with her happy baby smile at our parish calendar\u2014she had just greeted an image of Jesus.\u00a0 Specifically, she was looking at <em>Cristo Salvator Mundi<\/em>, painted by the Flemish artist, Quentin Massys, at the end of the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century.\u00a0 This particular image of Jesus, with his stately blessing and cross-topped scepter, was included in our parish calendar in honor of Christ the King.<\/p>\n<p>I paused, considering what my daughter was seeing\u2014and saying.\u00a0 Objectively, yes, Jesus fits the bill for whatever \u201cbaby\u201d means to my little girl.\u00a0 On the other hand, while we have plenty of pop Christmas songs about a \u201cnewborn king,\u201d we don\u2019t often think of Christ, the King, as a newborn baby.\u00a0 We humans can easily imagine time as linear, with the logical progression of a child growing <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/579117609de4bbacedc5fd77\/57a4f866e3df28ea3c3b7636\/5a45bd6c8165f55903336398\/1534452245293\/Triune+Christchild.jpg?format=1500w\" alt=\"Image result for Christ the newborn king\" width=\"312\" height=\"404\" \/>older, a child who would \u201cbecome\u201d the savior of the world.\u00a0 But, on the other hand, time doesn\u2019t work that way for God.\u00a0 Christ the King is the same Christ as the miracle of the Incarnation, who is the same Christ who, we hope, will welcome us into the kingdom of heaven at the end of time.\u00a0 Christ is both a man and our God in the same moment\u2014both the beginning and the end.<\/p>\n<p>So, yes, my little baby, Jesus <em>is<\/em> a little baby.\u00a0 Perhaps we all, no matter how old, big, or far removed from simplicity, are little babies, too: babies who need care, patience, and the simple warmth of a joyful embrace of love.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We have plenty of pop Christmas songs about a \u201cnewborn king,\u201d we don\u2019t often think of Christ, the King, as a newborn baby.\u00a0 <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":55,"featured_media":44083,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2},"_wpas_customize_per_network":false},"categories":[3119,255,17,91],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-44078","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-plaza-new-ws","category-children","category-liturgical-spirituality","category-liturgical-year"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Even Jesus gets &quot;Hi, Baby&quot; Harmon, Ph.D., is Project Director for the Obsculta Preaching Initiative at Saint John\u2019s School of Theology and Seminary in Collegeville, Minnesota. \u202fA Roman Catholic pastoral liturgist and American Catholic historian, Harmon is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame\u2019s liturgical studies program.\u202f She has contributed over a dozen articles and chapters to the fields of both liturgical studies and American Catholicism.\u202f She is the author of\u202f There Were Also Many Women There: Lay Women in the Liturgical Movement in the United States, 1926-1959\u202f(Collegeville: Liturgical Press, 2013) and\u202fMary and the Liturgical Year: A Pastoral Resource\u202f (Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications, 2023).
