{"id":43742,"date":"2018-10-31T11:54:43","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T16:54:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=43742"},"modified":"2018-11-09T08:33:07","modified_gmt":"2018-11-09T14:33:07","slug":"involuntary-immigration-feast-days-devotions-prayer-and-poetry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2018\/10\/31\/involuntary-immigration-feast-days-devotions-prayer-and-poetry\/","title":{"rendered":"Involuntary Immigration, Feast Days, Devotions, Prayer and Poetry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For many of us, today is Halloween, all hallows eve, the Vigil of All Saints, the last day of October, Mary&#8217;s month, month of the Rosary, month of the Queen of all saints.\u00a0 For many others, it&#8217;s also a day to walk another 40 miles toward the U.S. border or make a decision to turn back, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/the_americas\/meet-the-children-of-the-migrant-caravan-isaac-12-wants-to-build-his-mom-a-house\/2018\/10\/30\/cfa42df0-dbcf-11e8-8bac-bfe01fcdc3a6_story.html?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.11ca853e9669\">Notre Dame t-shirt<\/a>, with a rosary in hand, amidst <em>D<\/em>ia de Los Muertos celebrations, embracing &#8220;<em>memento mori&#8221; <\/em>not as an spiritual discipline of choice, but a motivation to keep going. Michael Walker<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The poem below is an excerpt from a longer poem in Natalia Trevi\u00f1o&#8217;s recent chapbook, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finishinglinepress.com\/product\/virginx-by-natalia-trevino\/\"><em>Virgin X<\/em><\/a>. I offer this here as a meditation on the relationship between liturgy and life in the face of what could feel like overwhelming events in the U.S. today. Our Lady of ______ and all the saints, pray for us.<\/p>\n<p>OUR LADY OF SAN JUAN DEL VALLE\/ SAN JUAN DE LOS LAGOS, DEPENDING ON WHICH SIDE OF THE BORDER YOU BELIEVE IN<\/p>\n<p>III. MIGRATING LA VIRGIN<\/p>\n<p>O Lady of San Juan de los Lagos,<br \/>\nYour eyes do not look down at us, half-shut.<\/p>\n<p>It is your dream, the whole Earth you carry above your head<br \/>\nwhere we do not fight for land,<\/p>\n<p>and we do not cross one another or jagged borders<br \/>\nwith our own travel-sized miracles: a miracle of a bottle of water;<\/p>\n<p>miracle of a photograph tucked under a bra; miracle<br \/>\nof a sandwich shared, made three million times,<\/p>\n<p>hundreds of miles away. You want us to swim in the one<br \/>\nocean, el mar, maria, your populated effigy,<\/p>\n<p>Great Mother Earth: as the dream, as the dreamer.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve crossed the brown to Rio Grande,<\/p>\n<p>three hundred times or more<br \/>\nwith my Green Card, then my Blue Card,<\/p>\n<p>while other children crawled across pale deserts<br \/>\nhid under helicopters, bridged the two lands<\/p>\n<p>in question with their water bottles and work and bones,<br \/>\nMadre de Misericordia, Mother of Misery, of Mercy.<\/p>\n<p>The difference between these children and me<br \/>\nwas the color of our papers\u2014<\/p>\n<p><em>We have papers<\/em>, my father always said, <em>papers!<\/em><br \/>\nThough I&#8217;d asked once if he could tell my mom<\/p>\n<p>to please dry my back better after my shower<br \/>\nso the kids would stop it, stop saying it\u2014<\/p>\n<p>because somehow my back<br \/>\nstayed wet all day long.<\/p>\n<p>You have the same name as my grandmother&#8217;s,<br \/>\nMaria de Socorro, Mother of Mercy<\/p>\n<p>I am still learning the difference<br \/>\nbetween the prayer and the one who prays.<\/p>\n<p><em>Born in Mexico and raised in Tejas between two worlds, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nataliatrevino.com\/\">Natalia Trevi\u00f1o<\/a> bridges understandings between those separated by arbitrary human borders.
