{"id":43205,"date":"2018-09-21T09:36:52","date_gmt":"2018-09-21T14:36:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=43205"},"modified":"2018-09-25T17:52:14","modified_gmt":"2018-09-25T22:52:14","slug":"rebuild-my-burning-church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2018\/09\/21\/rebuild-my-burning-church\/","title":{"rendered":"Rebuild My Burning Church"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the Exultation of the Holy Cross this year, our bishop lay prostrate on the floor of his cathedral.\u00a0 In his homily that followed, Archbishop Charles Thompson explained that lying prostrate was his own:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<figure style=\"width: 376px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/archindy.org\/criterion\/files\/2018\/09-21\/holyhour-large.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"376\" height=\"248\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Sean Gallagher, The Criterion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cact of penance and a pledge of doing everything in my power to do what is right, just and holy in eradicating the great scourge of sexual abuse and sexual harassment of all persons, most especially children and young people, making every effort to prevent it from happening again\u201d <em>(<a href=\"http:\/\/archindy.org\/criterion\/local\/2018\/09-21\/holyhour.html\">The Criterion<\/a>)<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Archbishop Thompson, as have so many bishops, have sought to say something\u2014do something\u2014which might help the faithful grapple with the growing lists of their pastors, chaplains, deacons, and teachers who have been charged with sexual assault.\u00a0 How many names have you known?\u00a0 How have you responded to the crisis\u2014or crises\u2014of sexual abuse unfolding and unravelling like some poisonous, stinging creature across the cold stone floors of our Roman Catholic churches?<\/p>\n<p>Some of us in the Roman Catholic world may try to ignore this most recent scandal\u2014which eerily sounds like one which unfolded 17 years ago in Boston, Massachusetts.\u00a0 But, teaching Catholic theology in a Catholic school hasn\u2019t afforded me that luxury.\u00a0 My students\u2014most of whom are active in ministry themselves\u2014need to talk about it.<\/p>\n<p>In my Catholic history course, we took a sharp detour from discussing 17<sup>th<\/sup>-century Jesuit missionaries running deep into woodlands of the American continent: we turned into an open forum in which the students (mostly college seminarians) grappled with what it fel<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.romancatholicman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/church-fire-770x439_c.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for church on fire\" width=\"360\" height=\"205\" \/>t like to have their process of vocational discernment suddenly start to feel as if they were running deep into a burning building.\u00a0 In another course, a student presentation likened the terror of abused children and minors of the present century to the suffering of the martyrs in the 200\u2019s; Harmon, Ph.D., is Project Director for the Obsculta Preaching Initiative at Saint John\u2019s School of Theology and Seminary in Collegeville, Minnesota. \u202fA Roman Catholic pastoral liturgist and American Catholic historian, Harmon is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame\u2019s liturgical studies program.\u202f She has contributed over a dozen articles and chapters to the fields of both liturgical studies and American Catholicism.\u202f She is the author of\u202f There Were Also Many Women There: Lay Women in the Liturgical Movement in the United States, 1926-1959\u202f(Collegeville: Liturgical Press, 2013) and\u202fMary and the Liturgical Year: A Pastoral Resource\u202f (Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications, 2023).
