Let us give thanks to God for the promise which ecumenical understanding and cooperation represents for a united witness to the saving truth of God\u2019s word in today\u2019s rapidly changing society&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong> In today\u2019s Gospel, Jesus asks us to pray for vocations: I pray that many of you will know and love Jesus Christ and, through that encounter, will dedicate yourselves completely to God, especially those of you who are called to the priesthood and religious life. There is widespread agreement that the lack of a solid ethical foundation for economic activity has contributed to the grave difficulties now being experienced by millions of people throughout the world&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong> Religion \u2026 is not a problem for legislators to solve, but a vital contributor to the national conversation. In this light, I cannot but voice my concern at the increasing marginalization of religion, particularly of Christianity, that is taking place in some quarters, even in nations which place a great emphasis on tolerance.<br \/>\n<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Address of Pope Benedict XVI to British Society<br \/>\n<\/em><em> Westminster Hall, Houses of Parliament, Sept. 17<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong> Fidelity to the word of God, precisely because it is a true word, demands of us an obedience which leads us together to a deeper understanding of the Lord\u2019s will, an obedience which must be free of intellectual conformism or facile accommodation to the spirit of the age&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong> Gathered in this ancient monastic church, we can recall the example of a great Englishman and churchman whom we honor in common: Saint Bede the Venerable. Here in England, as we know, there were many who staunchly defended the Mass, often at great cost, giving rise to that devotion to the Most Holy Eucharist which has been a hallmark of Catholicism in these lands&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong> I think of the immense suffering caused by the abuse of children, especially within the Church and by her ministers. Above all, I express my deep sorrow to the innocent victims of these unspeakable crimes, along with my hope that the power of Christ\u2019s grace, his sacrifice of reconciliation, will bring deep healing and peace to their lives. Here is the first lesson we can learn from his life: in our day, when an intellectual and moral relativism threatens to sap the very foundations of our society, Newman reminds us that, as men and women made in the image and likeness of God, we were created to know the truth, to find in that truth our ultimate freedom and the fulfillment of our deepest human aspirations.<br \/>\n<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Homily of Pope Benedict XVI<br \/>\n<\/em><em> Vigil of Beatification of Newman<br \/>\n<\/em><em> Hyde Park, London, Sept. 18<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong> [John Henry Newman] reminds us that faithfulness to prayer gradually transforms us into the divine likeness. As he wrote in one of his many fine sermons, \u201ca habit of prayer, the practice of turning to God and the unseen world in every season, in every place, in every emergency \u2013 prayer, I say, has what may be called a natural effect in spiritualizing and elevating the soul. A man is no longer what he was before; gradually \u2026 he has imbibed a new set of ideas, and become imbued with fresh principles.\u201d (<em>Parochial and Plain Sermons<\/em>, iv, 230-231)&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong> And indeed, what better goal could teachers of religion set themselves than Blessed John Henry\u2019s famous appeal for an intelligent, well-instructed laity: \u201cI want a laity, not arrogant, not rash in speech, not disputatious, but men who know their religion, who enter into it, who know just where they stand, who know what they hold and what they do not, who know their creed so well that they can give an account of it, who know so much of history that they can defend it.\u201d (<em>The Present Position of Catholics in England<\/em>, ix, 390)<br \/>\n<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Homily of Pope Benedict XVI, Beatification Mass<br \/>\n<\/em> <em>Cofton Park, Birmingham, Sept. 19<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong> I pray that among the graces of this visit will be a renewed dedication on the part of Christian leaders to the prophetic vocation they have received, and a new appreciation on the part of the people for the great gift of the ordained ministry. Prayer for vocations will then arise spontaneously, and we may be confident that the Lord will respond by sending laborers to bring in the plentiful harvest that he has prepared throughout the United Kingdom (cf.
