{"id":4262,"date":"2010-09-16T22:37:24","date_gmt":"2010-09-17T03:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=4262"},"modified":"2010-12-28T00:36:18","modified_gmt":"2010-12-28T06:36:18","slug":"moravian-cup-of-covenant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2010\/09\/16\/moravian-cup-of-covenant\/","title":{"rendered":"Moravian cup of covenant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Happy Moravian feast of the servants of God!<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to one of my students, this week I was introduced to the Moravian church&#8217;s custom of sharing &#8220;The cup of covenant.&#8221; According to the Moravian Archives newsletter, September 16 is a traditional day for its celebration. <a title=\"Moravian newsletter August 2008\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moravianchurcharchives.org\/thismonth\/08%20aug%20cup%20of%20covenant.pdf\">Here is<\/a> a 2008 article on this tradition:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the Moravian liturgical tradition the cup of\u00a0covenant is not to be confused with Holy Communion,\u00a0although terminology and form remind us of\u00a0Communion. Whereas the cup that is shared during the\u00a0celebration of the Lord\u2019s Supper is based on the cup\u00a0that Jesus took after the meal, the cup of covenant\u00a0goes back to the cup that was shared by Jesus and the\u00a0disciples at the beginning of the Passover meal (Luke\u00a022:17). The cup of covenant is not a sacrament, such\u00a0as Baptism and Holy Communion, but a sign of the\u00a0renewed commitment to service of those who partake\u00a0in it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Interested in the origin of the Moravian church?
