{"id":42429,"date":"2018-09-20T06:45:29","date_gmt":"2018-09-20T11:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=42429"},"modified":"2018-09-25T17:52:06","modified_gmt":"2018-09-25T22:52:06","slug":"national-anthems-in-church-hymnals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2018\/09\/20\/national-anthems-in-church-hymnals\/","title":{"rendered":"National Anthems in Church Hymnals?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When the new edition of the German hymnal <em>Gotteslob<\/em> came out in 2013, I was surprised that the appendix for Austria still contains the national anthem (as the 1975 edition had done too). Neither in Germany nor in Austria have I ever heard the national anthem in a service, and I can hardly imagine that this will ever happen. As far as I know, no German hymnal after World War II has contained the \u201cLied der Deutschen\u201d (or \u201cDeutschlandlied\u201d) by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben with the music from the \u201cEmperor\u2019s Hymn\u201d by Joseph Haydn which has served as national anthem since 1922 \u2013 with some important later clarifications about the lyrics.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42430\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42430\" style=\"width: 1001px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-42430\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/bundeshymne.jpg\" alt=\"Austrian &quot;Gotteslob&quot;\" width=\"1001\" height=\"734\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42430\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Austrian national anthem (\u201cBundeshymne\u201d) in the <em>Gotteslob<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some Bavarian appendices still contain the \u201cBayernlied\u201d (\u201cHymn of Bavaria,\u201d music by Konrad Max Kunz, there are different text versions in use today). Although I do not know exactly, I can imagine that this hymn (\u201cGod be with you, land of the Bavarians\u201d) is actually used in liturgies: Bavaria has always kept its own customs and identity compared to the rest of Germany. The \u201cHymn of Bavaria\u201d actually is the official anthem of the State of Bavaria. Other German dioceses do not have anything of that kind in their hymnals, and the anthems of the other German states \u2013 if they even exist \u2013 are much less known and used in public.<\/p>\n<p>The Austrian anthem (\u201cBundeshymne\u201d, <em>federal anthem<\/em>) is called \u201cLand der Berge, Land am Strome\u201d (\u201cLand of mountains, land by the river\u201d). It is sung with a melody by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, lyrics by Paula von Preradovi\u0107. The text was elected as the winner of a public contest in 1946 and then revised a bit before it became official in 1947. In 2011 two text passages where changed to make them gender-neutral (but less easy to sing because of metrical issues): \u201cHei-mat bist du gro-sser S\u00f6h-ne\u201d (\u201cYou are home of great sons\u201d) became \u201cHei-mat gro-sser T\u00f6ch-ter und S\u00f6h-ne\u201d) (\u201cHome of great daughters and sons\u201d), and \u201cBr\u00fcderch\u00f6re\u201d (\u201cfraternal choirs\u201d) became \u201cJubelch\u00f6re\u201d (\u201cjubilating choirs\u201d). The <em>Gotteslob<\/em> was printed some months after the change, so it contains the official current lyrics.<\/p>\n<p>It might be the affect of someone whose nation has brought so much pain and horror over the world, but I have no sympathy for national symbolism in Christian services. I am thankful that there are no propers in the Missal for any German or Austrian national holiday. With much discomfort I can accept the \u201cHymn of Bavaria\u201d as a sort of regional pious custom: At least it refers to God by name and can be regarded as a prayer for the nation. But the Austrian anthem is not even that: Apart from its solemn and declamatory language, there is nothing religious (even less Christian) about it.<\/p>\n<p>This is not bad at all: How could I expect other citizens to join in an anthem that refers to the Christian God or any other God? Singing about the beauty of the land, its history and cultural abundance makes sense as a national anthem. But why must it be included in a hymnal used in Catholic services?
