{"id":42010,"date":"2018-05-30T11:40:26","date_gmt":"2018-05-30T16:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=42010"},"modified":"2018-06-08T08:36:28","modified_gmt":"2018-06-08T13:36:28","slug":"cdf-prefect-ladaria-reaffirms-the-all-male-priesthood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2018\/05\/30\/cdf-prefect-ladaria-reaffirms-the-all-male-priesthood\/","title":{"rendered":"CDF Prefect Ladaria Reaffirms the All-Male Priesthood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osservatoreromano.va\/it\/news\/il-carattere-definitivo-della-dottrina-di-ordinati\">article written yesterday in <\/a><em>L\u2019Osservatore Romano,<\/em> the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith [CDF] who is soon to become a cardinal, Luis Ladaria, stated that the teaching on the all-male priesthood is \u201cdefinitive\u201d and cannot be changed now or in the future.<\/p>\n<p>In this Ladaria reaffirms <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/congregations\/cfaith\/documents\/rc_con_cfaith_doc_19761015_inter-insigniores_en.html\">Inter insigniores<\/a><\/em>, issued with Paul VI\u2019s approval by the CDF in 1976, and <a href=\"https:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/apost_letters\/1994\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_apl_19940522_ordinatio-sacerdotalis.html\"><em>Ordinatio Sacerdotalis<\/em><\/a>, issued by Pope John Paul II in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>In 1995, the CDF under Joseph Ratzinger (the future Benedict XVI), in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/congregations\/cfaith\/documents\/rc_con_cfaith_doc_19951028_dubium-ordinatio-sac_en.html\">response to a dubium<\/a><em>,<\/em> stated that the teaching of <em>Ordinatio Sacerdotalis\u00a0<\/em>is to &#8220;be held definitively, is to be understood as belonging to the deposit of faith.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/congregations\/cfaith\/documents\/rc_con_cfaith_doc_1998_professio-fidei_en.html\">doctrinal commentary<\/a> of 1998, the CDF under Cardinal Ratzinger explained the distinction made by John Paul II in <em>Ad tuendam fidem<\/em> between two categories of doctrine:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>first, doctrines \u201cdivinely and formally revealed and, as such, as irreformable,\u201d which are given assent \u201cbased directly on faith in the authority of the word of God,\u201d and<\/li>\n<li>second, doctrines which might either be\n<ul>\n<li>defined <em>ex cathedra<\/em>\u00a0 or<\/li>\n<li>taught \u201cinfallibly by the ordinary and universal Magisterium of the Church.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Doctrines in either the first or second category are to be definitively held \u201cbased on faith in the Holy Spirit&#8217;s assistance to the Magisterium and on the Catholic doctrine of the infallibility of the Magisterium.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The teaching on the all-male priesthood is held to belong to the second subdivision of the second category \u2013 not defined <em>ex cathedra,<\/em> but to be definitively held based on the infallibility of the ordinary and universal magisterium.<\/p>\n<p>(There is a further third category in <em>Ad tuendam fidem,<\/em> not treated here, which concerns \u201cteachings set forth by the authentic ordinary Magisterium in a non-definitive way.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>The effect of Ladaria\u2019s article is to reaffirm that the teaching on the all-male priesthood, in the second subdivision of the second category, is to be definitively held.<\/p>\n<p>In his article Ladara writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is a matter of serious concern to see the emergence in some countries of voices that question the definitiveness of this doctrine. To argue that it is not definitive, it is argued that it was not defined <em>ex cathedra<\/em> and that, then, a later decision by a future Pope or council could overturn it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is difficult not to see the passage as a rebuke of Cardinal Sch\u00f6nborn, <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2018\/03\/31\/cardinal-schonborn-on-resurrection-womens-ordination-development-of-doctrine\/\">who has stated<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One of the key questions is the role of women in the church. In this, religious organizations as a whole are in need of development\u2026 The question of ordination is a question that surely can only be settled by a council. A pope cannot decide this by himself. This is too large a question for it to be settled from the desk of a pope.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Was the recent statement of Sch\u00f6nborn the reason for Ladaria\u2019s article to appear just now? Or was it provoked by other statements advocating women priests or questioning the status of the prohibition?<\/p>\n<p>Or\u2026 did Ladaria think the restatement was needed as a reassurance now because the Vatican <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2016\/08\/02\/whos-on-the-vatican-commission-to-study-women-deacons\/\">commission on women deacons<\/a>\u00a0will be issuing\u00a0a positive report?
