{"id":41969,"date":"2018-05-22T18:39:39","date_gmt":"2018-05-22T23:39:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=41969"},"modified":"2018-05-31T08:39:50","modified_gmt":"2018-05-31T13:39:50","slug":"millennials-and-the-parish-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2018\/05\/22\/millennials-and-the-parish-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"Millennials and the Parish Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spring rushed by us without a word this year\u2014with too many warm-ups and cold-snaps to count. Now, even though the calendar claims the summer solstice is not for weeks, summer is upon us on our side of the city.\u00a0 I know this not because of buzzing lawnmowers, blooming irises, or even billowing checkered flags tacked above my neighbors\u2019 garage doors.\u00a0 I know summer is here because we have entered into the great battle of the parish festival yard signs.<\/p>\n<p>A yard sign is a simple thing, yet it boldly makes a statement regarding identity, allegiances, bel<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/media.cleveland.com\/willowick\/photo\/20120527-12jpg-000634f907b0ec0a.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for parish festival yard sign\" width=\"236\" height=\"177\" \/>onging, and, in good old-fashioned Catholic politics, parish boundaries.\u00a0 In our little corner of the city, there are no fewer than four parishes competing for festival attendees with their various \u201cfun festivals,\u201d \u201csummer fests,\u201d \u201cJunefests\u201d and the like.\u00a0 Our neighborhood alone, technically divided between <em>two <\/em>parishes (St. Anne\u2019s and St. Mary\u2019s*) hosts <em>three <\/em>different parishes\u2019 festival signs (St. Bernadette snuck in there, too).\u00a0 \u00a0I was proud to note earlier today that my own parish (St. Anne\u2019s) is the winner so far\u2014I counted five yard signs on my morning walk with my daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Things can get ugly, too, with these signs\u2026in fact, St. Bernadette\u2019s festival signs mysteriously showed up on the lawns of <em>both <\/em>St. Mary\u2019s and St. Anne\u2019s!\u00a0 Even worse, the infamous upstart Our Lady of the Angels <em>stole <\/em>St. Anne\u2019s festival date!\u00a0 Our little parish was forced to do the unthinkable: change our festival date to another week of the month\u2014giving up the date we\u2019ve held since time immemorial (or at least 1983).<\/p>\n<p>Now, these festivals clearly hold clout amongst certain members of the parish\u2014and even I, unrelenting introvert and newcomer to St.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.campsprings.com\/images\/588_festival.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for parish summer festival 1980s\" width=\"446\" height=\"297\" \/> Anne\u2019s (you had to literally be born and baptized in St. Anne\u2019s to not be a newcomer) have pride in my parish and want to support it.\u00a0 I proudly toted that yard sign home and stuck it in our lawn.\u00a0 But\u2026to be honest&#8230;I can\u2019t stand parish festivals.<\/p>\n<p>I think, in theory, I love the idea of the parish bazaar: booths with food on sticks and sticky children conjure up nostalgic images. \u00a0I won a gold fish at a coin toss once, we could always find my dad and uncles in the beer tent, and I remember racing my brothers through a giant giraffe-shaped bounce house at my home parish\u2019s \u201cfall festival\u201d in south central Indiana.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, parish<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i.pinimg.com\/originals\/4d\/b1\/a1\/4db1a17925f2be4e473f5fba85bf1420.jpg\" alt=\"Related image\" width=\"183\" height=\"273\" \/> festivals\u2014at this moment in my life\u2014hold little attraction for my family: I have no interest in winning a gold fish, my husband has no desire to hold a beverage-filled solo cup in the beer tent, and there is no way I am lobbing my 7-month old in the \u201cbounce house\u201d for at least half a decade.\u00a0 But, aside from these drawbacks, I find that festivals seem to cater to extreme ends of the parish demographic: those with school-aged children who might make use of the games, etc., and those parishioners who are identified as members of generations prior to mine, who all know each other, and have been hosting this same parish festival since I was a 7-month old myself.\u00a0 I find myself an introverted outsider to my parish festival of the present!<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it is just my shyness that makes it difficult for me to enjoy a large lot of semi-strangers. And, I promise, we are <em>very <\/em>involved in our parish!\u00a0 But, maybe it\u2019s not just me.\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s my generation.\u00a0 I wonder if the parish festival attendees (families with school-age children, and families composed of at least \u201cGeneration X\u201d Catholics) somewhat mirror Mass attendance?\u00a0 Are Millennials (with whom I reluctantly identify) going to St. Anne\u2019s Summer Festival?\u00a0 Are Millennials going to St. Anne\u2019s for Mass?\u00a0 What is it about the parish festival that ultimately alienates me?\u00a0 Is it a personal introvert thing, or are my feelings matched by other \u201cMillennials\u201d?\u00a0 Do Millennials go to <em>your <\/em>parish festival?<\/p>\n<p>These questions have been prompted, in part, by a fascinating new volume I\u2019m reading, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordscholarship.com\/view\/10.1093\/acprof:oso\/9780190645168.001.0001\/acprof-9780190645168\">Catholic Parishes of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century<\/a><\/em> (Oxford, 2017).\u00a0 This volume seeks <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordscholarship.com\/view\/covers\/9780190645168.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordscholarship.com\/view\/10.1093\/acprof:oso\/9780190645168.001.0001\/acprof-9780190645168 noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordscholarship.com\/view\/covers\/9780190645168.jpg\" alt=\"Catholic Parishes of the 21st Century\" width=\"165\" height=\"251\" \/><\/a>to illustrate parish life in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century much like the well-known <a href=\"https:\/\/icl.nd.edu\/initiatives-projects\/church-life-research\/\">Notre Dame Study of Catholic Parish Life<\/a> did 35 years ago (when my parish\u2019s festival began).\u00a0 The statistics of this new study conducted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/nalm.org\/resources\/emerging-models\/\">Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate<\/a>, have been surprisingly informative, particularly as they paint, with numbers, a clear picture of shifting parish needs and populations, the proportionate decrease in active priests and increase in lay ecclesial ministers, and the profound slowness with which the \u201cbrick and mortar\u201d churches move in response to rapidly changing people who compose parish demographics.<\/p>\n<p>Is it just me, or does it seem odd that the parish festival is still \u201cthe\u201d social event for Catholic parishes of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century, as it was for Catholic parishes of 1983?\u00a0 I wonder, in short, if the parish festival is a \u201cbrick and mortar\u201d gold fish coin toss of the past?\u00a0 Or perhaps, if there were a festival in the present, would it change in any way which might make me, introverted Millennial, more compelled to attend?\u00a0 Perhaps the better question to ask is, rather, how <em>long <\/em>will there be parish festivals, if a key and explosive demographic within the Catholic Church is not as interested in attending?<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t have an immediate answer to my questions\u2014and have a healthy suspicion that this aversion to the \u201cJunefest\u201d may be \u201ca personal problem.\u201d\u00a0 Nonetheless, I\u2019ll continue to ponder the parish festival\u2026and, in the meantime, we\u2019ll be shunting the lawnmower around our St. Anne\u2019s festival sign, stuck out in our front yard.<\/p>\n<p>*Names have been changed to protect the innocent!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is the parish festival a \u201cbrick and mortar\u201d gold fish coin toss of the past?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":55,"featured_media":41972,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2},"_wpas_customize_per_network":false},"categories":[3119,357],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-41969","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-plaza-new-ws","category-demographics-and-sociology"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
