{"id":41883,"date":"2018-05-15T11:59:05","date_gmt":"2018-05-15T16:59:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=41883"},"modified":"2018-05-17T14:25:23","modified_gmt":"2018-05-17T19:25:23","slug":"coming-plenary-session-of-the-congregation-for-divine-worship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2018\/05\/15\/coming-plenary-session-of-the-congregation-for-divine-worship\/","title":{"rendered":"Coming: Congregation for Divine Worship Plenary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Pray Tell<\/em> as learned from multiple sources that a plenary session of the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments (CDW) has been called. It is reported that this meeting will take place in February, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Plenary sessions of the CDW are rather infrequent. The most recent such session was in March 13, 2009, when Benedict XVI delivered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewtn.com\/library\/PAPALDOC\/b16plenassemcdw.htm\">an address on eucharistic adoration<\/a>.\u00a0Prior to that, John Paul II spoke to a plenary session <a href=\"https:\/\/adoremus.org\/2001\/12\/15\/Pope-John-Paul-II-Addresses-Liturgical-Assembly\/\">on translation and popular devotions<\/a> in 2001,\u00a0and in March, 2005 \u2013 less than a month before his death \u2013 John Paul sent a letter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fjp2.com\/us\/john-paul-ii\/online-library\/letters\/5990-letter-to-card-francis-arinze-on-the-occasion-of-the-plenary-of-the-congregation-for-divine-worship-and-the-discipline-of-the-sacraments-march-3-2005\">on the <em>\u201cars celebrandi\u201d<\/em><\/a> (manner of celebrating) to be read out at a plenary session.<\/p>\n<p>The CDW currently has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/congregations\/ccdds\/documents\/rc_con_ccdds_doc_20161109_membri-dicastero_it.html\">21 cardinals and 18 bishops<\/a> from around the world in its membership.\u00a0For a plenary session, all 39 of these members are called to Rome. The CDW currently\u00a0 has 23 consultors.<\/p>\n<p>Since his election in March, 2013, Pope Francis has gradually but resolutely reshaped the roster of personnel in the Vatican liturgy offices. Already in September, 2013 he <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2013\/09\/26\/new-consultants-for-liturgies-with-pope\/\">dismissed all the consultants<\/a> of the Office of Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff and appointed new members. This \u201csea change\u201d\u00a0was seen as a move away from the \u201cReform of the Reform\u201d movement which was well-represented among the previous consultors. Francis has also replaced most of the <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2016\/10\/28\/pope-names-27-bishops-advisors-to-vatican-cdw\/\">members<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2017\/01\/14\/new-consultors-for-the-cdw\/\">consultors<\/a> of the CDW, with new appointments made in October, 2016 and January, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The prefect of the CDW is Cardinal Robert Sarah of Guinea. He was appointed to a five-year term as prefect in November, 2014, and he finds himself presiding over a congregation that is increasingly out of sync with his own views. He has repeatedly been contradicted publicly by Pope Francis, for example when he called for all priests to <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2016\/07\/11\/it-is-better-to-avoid-using-the-expression-the-reform-of-the-reform\/\">celebrate Mass <em>ad orientem<\/em><\/a> (facing \u201ceast,\u201d away from the congregation) \u00a0in July, 2016, and when he claimed that <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2017\/10\/22\/pope-francis-corrects-cardinal-sarah-on-translation\/\">Rome retained control over liturgical translations<\/a>\u00a0in October, 2017.
