{"id":41258,"date":"2018-03-16T19:48:50","date_gmt":"2018-03-17T00:48:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=41258"},"modified":"2018-03-19T10:05:58","modified_gmt":"2018-03-19T15:05:58","slug":"serving-others-prayer-and-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2018\/03\/16\/serving-others-prayer-and-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Serving Others: Prayer and Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>On Fridays of Lent,\u00a0<\/em>Pray Tell<em>\u00a0highlights stories of individuals and organizations which inspire and challenge us by their self-giving service to others.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2018\/03\/16\/serving-others-prayer-and-action\/prayer-action-fr-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-41261\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-41261 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Prayer-Action-Fr-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"172\" height=\"172\" \/><\/a>When he was in seminary \u2013 this was in 2005 \u2013 Gale Hammerschmidt was trying to convince parents to let their children to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicextension.org\/stories\/prayer-and-action\">go on a service trip to another country<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the dads said, \u201cThese service trips are expensive. Why should we send our children to these far-off places when there are poor people right in our own community who need help?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before long, based on just that dad\u2019s question, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.archkck.org\/prayer-and-action-info\">Prayer and Action<\/a>\u201d\u00a0was born.<\/p>\n<p>Young people in the diocese of Salina, Kansas spend five days sleeping in school gyms and classroom floors. They serve elderly and needy people by painting houses, cleaning up yards, doing minor repairs, working at food kitchens, and performing other community service. What started as a one-week program is now seven weeks of such service opportunities, with one of the weeks especially for college students.<\/p>\n<p>These weeks of prayer and service are facilitated by teams of seminarians and young adults.<\/p>\n<p>The day begins early, with Rosary at 7:30 am and Mass at 8:00 am. Collatio each evening is an hour and a quarter of \u201cplaying, worshiping, and growing together in Jesus Christ.\u201d The day ends with Night Prayer at 10:00 pm.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-41262 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Prayer-Action-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"290\" \/>The T-shirts that student participants wear quote the words of Mother Teresa:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want you to find the poor here, right in your own home first. And begin love there. Be that good news to your own people. And find out about your next door neighbor \u2013 Do you know who they are?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fr. Hammerschmidt, who was ordained in 2012, has handed the summer program over to other seminarians, while he has become more involved in Hispanic ministry in the Salina diocese.
