Pray Tell<\/em> previously reported that\u00a0\u00a0Bishop Crispian Hollis apologized for the new missal translation<\/a>, and that\u00a0Bishop Thomas McMahon added his own mea culpa<\/a> for the bishops’ approval of the 2011 missal. Now another bishop has chimed in.<\/p>\n

Bishop John Crowley, Bishop Emeritus of Middlesbrough, who resides in retirement in Harpenden, a town in Hertfordshire, has written to The Tablet<\/em> to \u201crepent\u201d of the bishops\u2019 decision to approve the 2011 Roman Missal.<\/em><\/p>\n

Bishop Crowley writes of a \u201cstrange and deeply uncomfortable situation\u201d because of a \u201cstand-off\u201d between the bishops\u2019 conference in England and Wales and many priests and people.<\/p>\n

The bishop says that \u201cthe difficulty faced by those charged with presiding at the liturgy is hard to overstate, such is the convoluted nature of many of the prayers\u2026\u201d In a key passage he writes, \u201cLike a number of my fellow bishops I have had plenty of time to repent of our original decision to vote this translation through Conference.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bishop Crowley says that leaders within the bishops\u2019 conference are \u201cpastoral men\u201d who will realize that if this issue is \u201cleft to fester, [it] could damage relationships of trust and confidence within the Catholic community of England and Wales.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
