The Christmas story begins with an empire.
\nIt begins with Caesar Augustus\u2014
\nwhich is not a name, but a quasi-religious title
\nthat was taken by Octavian,
\nthe dictator who defeated two former allies
\nto become the sole ruler of Rome\u2019s empire,
\nwhile maintaining a veneer of the old democracy.
\nIt begins with an empire that secures peace\u2014
\nthe famed pax Romana\u2014
\nthrough the conquest and control of peoples.
\nIt begins with that empire\u2019s power over “all the world,”
\nexercised by bureaucratic functionaries
\nlike Quirinius, the governor of Syria,
\nand manifested in the tax census,
\ncarried out to catalogue and extract
\nthe wealth latent in the empire\u2019s conquered lands.<\/p>\n

The outward contours of empire
\nhave changed since the ancient world,
\nbut the reality should be familiar to us all.
\nIt is the aspiration to world-dominance
\nthrough bluff and bluster
\nand sheer, raw power.
\nWe see it today in the superpowers
\nthat jockey with each other
\nfor military and economic hegemony.
\nWe see it in corporations that seek to play the tune
\nto which the governments of the world dance.
\nWe see it in our own nation\u2019s recently released
\nNational Security Strategy, which assures us that,
\n“America\u2019s values and influence,
\nunderwritten by American power,
\nmake the world more free, secure, and prosperous.”
\nIn fact, from the time of Octavian-called-Augustus
\nto that of Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, and Donald Trump,
\nthe promise of peace through dominance
\nhas so pervaded our world,
\nthat many have come to assume
\nthat empire simply is the human story.
\nThe long history of imperial power
\nis a perhaps-regrettable-but-nevertheless-inevitable tale
\nwith which we must make our peace
\nif we wish to be free, secure, and prosperous.<\/p>\n

But on this night the story of empire
\nis interrupted by a child.
\nIn the middle of the tale of Octavian\u2019s power
\nthe voice of God sounds forth
\nin the cries of a newborn child.
\nIn a world ruled by wealth and power
\nan angel appears to poor shepherds
\nwith good news of great joy.
\nIn a land conquered and subjugated
\nby the armies of Caesar Augustus
\nan army of angels sings out,
\n“Glory to God in the highest
\nand on earth peace.”<\/p>\n

Just as a child might interrupt
\na boring story told by adults
\nabout the latest political scandal
\nor a long-term workplace rivalry
\nor a long-held family grudge
\nwith its own fantastic tale
\nof dragons and magic and adventure,
\nso too the Christ child comes to interrupt
\nthe tedious-yet-deadly story of worldly power
\nwith a fantastic tale of glory and peace and joy.
\nOnly this tale is no fantasy;
\nit is the very truth of God.
\nIt is the eruption into the story of empire
\nof the truth that can lift the yoke of oppression
\nand smash the rod of the taskmaster,
\nthe truth that consumes
\nevery boot that tramped in battle
\nand every cloak rolled in blood.
\nIn the cry of the Christ child
\nwe hear the voice of every person
\ncrushed beneath the yoke of power,
\nbut we hear also the cry of the one called
\nWonder-Counselor, God-Hero,
\nFather-Forever, Prince of Peace.
\nWe hear the cry of one whose dominion
\nis vast and forever peaceful.<\/p>\n

And yet, the story of empire goes on.
\nBurdens are still laid
\non the shoulders of the poor
\nand boots still tramp in battle.
\nThe coming of Christ
\nhas not brought that story to an end.
\nBut even as the story of empire
\ncontinues its predictable narrative arc,
\nthe voice of God in the cry of the Christ child,
\nin the proclamation of the angel,
\nin the song of the heavenly army,
\ninterrupts that story
\nand begins to tell a new tale
\nin which we who are followers of Jesus
\nall play a part.<\/p>\n

For the saving grace of God
\nhas appeared among us in the person of Jesus:
\nin his humble birth,
\nin his faithful ministry,
\nin his willingness to die for the truth,
\nin his defeat of death and rising to new life.
\nThis grace has appeared, not rescuing us out of this world,
\nbut “training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires
\nand to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age.”
\nIn Jesus, the interruptive grace of God
\ncreates a new people who live a new story
\nas they await the final coming of Jesus,
\nwhen the story of empire will end,
\nand the world will know
\nthe freedom of God\u2019s servants,
\nthe security of God\u2019s love,
\nand the prosperity of God\u2019s generosity.<\/p>\n

But until that day, we wait in hope,
\nand tell with our lives the new story
\nbegun by Christ in the days of Caesar Augustus,
\nwhen Quirinius was governor of Syria
\nand Mary and Joseph made the long journey
\nto the city of David.
\nThrough God\u2019s grace,
\nthat story continues to be written in us,
\nwhen we remember those who suffer
\nand make their sorrows our own,
\nwhen we speak out to defend the defenseless
\nand to hold those in power accountable,
\nwhen we gather week by week
\nto tell the story of Jesus,
\nand eat and drink his body and blood:
\nhe who was peace in the midst of conflict,
\nwho was hope in the midst of despair,
\nwho was light in the midst of darkness,
\nwho was undying life in the midst of death.
\nGlory to God in the highest,
\nand on earth peace, hope, light and life
\nto those on whom God\u2019s favor rest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
