Professor Dr. Thomas S\u00f6ding of the University of Bochum holds that line in the Lord\u2019s Prayer translated as \u201cAnd lead us not into temptation\u201d should not be changed.<\/p>\n

In an interview with DomRadio<\/em><\/a> of the Archdiocese of Cologne,\u00a0S\u00f6ding said that this is the correct translation of the Greek text of the New Testament \u2013 and \u201cif one wishes to change something here, one should fundamentally change something in the entire Jesus tradition of the New Testament.\u201d<\/p>\n

He says that the change recently approved by the French Catholic bishops, \u201clet us not fall into temptation,\u201d is not a translation but a paraphrase. The previous French translation, \u201csubjugate us not to temptation,\u201d gave \u201ca brutal image of God,\u201d but the most recent change is \u201ctoo much of a good thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Referring to the prayer of Jesus, \u201cnot my will, but yours be done,\u201d S\u00f6ding understands the meaning of the difficult line in the Lord\u2019s Prayer to be this:<\/p>\n

When one prayers \u201cLead us not into temptation,\u201d \u2026 this is what is expressed: If you were to lead me into temptation, I would not endure. But thank you that you do not do this, and I express this to you. \u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He said further,<\/p>\n

I confess that I myself am weak. But I entrust myself to God, that he preserve me from temptation. Thus this petition is not an expression of anxiety, but rather of trust.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

S\u00f6ding noted also that in Germany the traditional wording is used also by Protestant and Orthodox churches, which is of ecumenical significance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
