{"id":39765,"date":"2017-11-28T15:50:39","date_gmt":"2017-11-28T21:50:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=39765"},"modified":"2018-09-09T15:42:12","modified_gmt":"2018-09-09T20:42:12","slug":"multiple-translations-in-use-together","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2017\/11\/28\/multiple-translations-in-use-together\/","title":{"rendered":"Multiple Translations in Use Together"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2017\/11\/28\/multiple-translations-in-use-together\/tower-of-babel-breughel\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-39771\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-39771\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Tower-of-Babel-Breughel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"878\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Tower of Babel, by Peter Breughel the Elder<\/p>\n<p>by Neil Xavier O&#8217;Donoghue<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">November 26. 2017<\/p>\n<p>Today is Christ the King and at the end of the day I had a simple reflection on the furor about the various proposals (including <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2017\/11\/13\/rehabilitating-the-1998-sacramentary\/\">my own<\/a>)\u00a0to use some sort of an edited version of the 1998 Sacramentary translation side by side with the current 2011 Roman Missal translation.<\/p>\n<p>Some objections to the possible rehabilitation of the 1998 Sacramentary mention how confusing it would be if in English we had two translations of some prayers in parallel use, with the celebrant having the possibility of picking whichever he thought better for his given assembly.<\/p>\n<p>I am a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ, in the U.S.A., on loan to the Archdiocese of Armagh in Ireland. My primary ministry is in a seminary, but I also help out in a local parish as a weekend assistant. This morning I had to leave the seminary early to celebrate Mass so I prayed Morning Prayer by myself using my U.S. breviary. When I pray by myself I usually use this translation as I\u2019ve been using it since I was a teenager and I\u2019m more used to it (I\u2019ll leave it to the Canon Lawyers to argue as to whether this validly fulfills my obligation to recite the Liturgy of the Hours!!). At the conclusion of Morning Prayer I prayed this concluding prayer:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Almighty and merciful God<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>you break the power of evil<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>and make all things new<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>in your Son Jesus Christ, the King of the universe.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>May all in heaven and earth<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>proclaim your glory<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>and never cease to praise you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We ask this<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>through Our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>who lives and reigns<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>with you and the Holy Spirit,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>one God for ever and ever.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Then I went to celebrate Mass at the parish, where I prayed this Opening Prayer (from the current Roman Missal):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Almighty ever-living God,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>whose will is to restore all things<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>in your beloved Son, the King of the universe,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>grant, we pray,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>that the whole creation, set free from slavery,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>may render your majesty service<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>and ceaselessly proclaim your praise.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>one God, for ever and ever.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Then, when I returned to the Seminary, I prayed evening Prayer in the Seminary Chapel with the seminarians. We used the Irish edition of the breviary (which was not prepared by ICEL, but by the Bishops of Ireland, England &amp; Wales, Scotland, Australia, etc.). At the conclusion of the prayer we prayed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Almighty, ever-living God,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>it is your will<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>to unite the entire universe<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>under your beloved Son,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Jesus Christ, the King of heaven and earth.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Grant freedom to the whole of creation,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>and let it praise and serve your majesty for ever<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>(We make our prayer) through our Lord\u2026<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If I\u2019m not mistaken I prayed three distinct approved English translations of the same prayer and it did not cause me any undue spiritual distress or confusion. In fact, I still think that if the 1998 Sacramentary translation were added as a possibility it would not be the end of the world. For completeness sake, this is how it is translated in that version:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Almighty and eternal God,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>you chose to restore all things in Christ your Son,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>who is king of heaven and earth.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Grant that all creation,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>set free from the bondage of sin and death,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>may offer homage to your majesty<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>and join in singing your eternal praise.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>God for ever and ever.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The English and Welsh Bishops\u2019 Conference has recently stated that the Congregation for Divine Worship has informed them that Pope Francis\u2019\u00a0<em>motu proprio Magnum principium\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>\u201ccannot be applied retroactively.\u201d And that specifically this means that the possibility of a future approval of the 1998 Sacramentary is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2017\/11\/21\/bishops-of-england-and-wales-get-a-no-on-the-1998-sacramentary\/\">off the table<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As some comments in the post on this development have already noted, I also think this is more a case of people getting the answer they wanted. I am reminded of the story of the two young novices who went separately to their spiritual director, one asked permission to smoke while he prayed and was told that this was totally disrespectful and not possible. His confrere asked for permission to pray while he smoked and was commended for his desire to bring God into every aspect of his life.<\/p>\n<p>I honestly can\u2019t see this as being a case of <em>Roma locuta est, causa finita est<\/em>. There is simply too much weight in the arguments for granting formal approval to these texts that, while not perfect or eternal, have been developed with great expertise and sensitivity to the spiritual needs of English-speaking Catholic assemblies. An adaption of some of the central texts of the 1998 Sacramentary is simply the best solution to our current worship needs. The intervention of the English and Welsh bishops may dampen my proposal a little, but they do nothing to address the pastoral issues that remain and our need to find a practical solution to a real problem. We must not simply resign ourselves to the continued use of a manifestly substandard liturgical translation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Neil Xavier O&#8217;Donoghue is a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey. Neil Xavier O'Donoghue"},"description":"Neil Xavier O\u2019Donoghue is originally from Cork, Ireland. He is a presbyter of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ who has ministered in parishes on both sides of the Atlantic. He has spent many years as an academic mentor to seminarians. Neil currently serves as Programme Director for Liturgical Programmes at the Pontifical University and as Acting Director of the National Centre for Liturgy. Since 2020 he has also served as the Executive Secretary for Liturgy to the Irish Catholic Bishops Conference. He has studied at Seton Hall University (BA, MDiv), the University of Notre Dame (MA), and St Vladimir\u2019s Orthodox Theological Seminary (MTh). He holds a Doctorate in Theology (Ph.D.) from St Patrick\u2019s College, Maynooth and is in the process of completing a second doctorate (D.D) in the Pontifical Facultad de Teolog\u00eda Redemptoris Mater in Callao, Peru. Neil has published a translation of the Confessio of St. Patrick: St. Patrick: His Confession and Other Works (Totowa, NJ, 2009), as well editing the third edition of Fredrick Edward Warren\u2019s The Liturgy and Ritual of the Celtic Church (Piscataway, NJ, 2010). In 2011 the University of Notre Dame Press published The Eucharist in Pre-Norman Ireland an adaptation of his doctoral thesis and in 2017 the Alcuin Club published his Liturgical Orientation: The Position of the President at the Eucharist. His articles have appeared in The Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, The Furrow and Antiphon.
