{"id":39678,"date":"2017-11-25T00:00:53","date_gmt":"2017-11-25T06:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=39678"},"modified":"2017-12-02T18:14:24","modified_gmt":"2017-12-03T00:14:24","slug":"pumpkins-and-pine-trees-and-palms-oh-my","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2017\/11\/25\/pumpkins-and-pine-trees-and-palms-oh-my\/","title":{"rendered":"Pumpkins and Pine Trees and Palms, Oh My\u2026."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had the pleasure of returning to Mass at my parish this past weekend, after a hiatus following the birth of my daughter.\u00a0 This being my first time leaving my daughter for more than five minutes, my husband and I left for Mass with about six minutes to spare.\u00a0 As you may be anticipating, we arrived\u00a0<em>late<\/em>, and not only were noticed by Father as we sheepishly appeared during the Kyrie (sorry!), but had no choice but to take the walk of shame to the only empty pews in the house: the front row, of course.<\/p>\n<p>As we settled in for the first reading, my energies quickly shifted from Catholic guilt at being late for Mass to the wondrous decorative display upon the altar. We have had pumpkins and gourds on the altar platform since early October (and I smiled<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/store.natureindoors.com\/images\/products\/Nature-Indoors-Norfolk-Pine-lrg.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for norfolk pines red pot\" width=\"229\" height=\"305\" \/> to read\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2017\/10\/13\/the-theme-of-todays-liturgy-is-squash\/\">Lizette Larson&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0piece on this subject).\u00a0 But now,\u00a0our\u00a0pumpkins were joined by glistening Norfolk pines in bright red pots: bright red pots because the snowflake pattern showed up more clearly against them\u2026and glistening because the pines had just a\u00a0<em>touch\u00a0<\/em>of glitter!\u00a0 As I surveyed the\u00a0scene more closely, I noticed that we not only had the pines, but two straggler palm trees (Ordinary Time leftovers) nestled amidst the greenery behind the altar.\u00a0 My liturgical arts and environment brain started exploding.<\/p>\n<p>Now, let me first say that I love our parish and our parishioners.\u00a0 It is truly a special place, full of wonderful people.\u00a0 In fact, as I write this, one of my parish friends is picking up some groceries for me while I watch my baby struggle through \u201ctummy time\u201d!\u00a0 Sometimes, though, strange things happen\u2026like pumpkins and pine trees and palms\u2026all in the same weekend.\u00a0 Is there a saying about \u201cloving the liturgists and hating the liturgical\u00a0<em>faux pas<\/em>\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps instead of simply judging, I should ask: is it even a problem that we have this mishmash of secular plant life in our worship space?\u00a0 Our commercial world puts out Christmas decorations the day after Halloween (or earlier, if you\u2019re in the craft store), and palm trees are a fairly mainstream piece of office d\u00e9cor.\u00a0 Furthermore, our worship space is modern (c. 1993), so, if we attempt to orient the space to the liturgical year or season, its clean whites and wood demand decoration with other, worldly objects.<\/p>\n<p>However, in my parish&#8217;s case of pumpkins and palm trees and pines, there is something more deeply at play than (odd) liturgical choices.\u00a0 At the heart of the matter, I believe, lies the role and function of liturgical symbols.\u00a0 In sacred <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews.com\/southbendtribune.com\/content\/tncms\/assets\/v3\/editorial\/3\/20\/32020da6-04c5-11e3-b25c-001a4bcf6878\/520b502ab41a2.image.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for basilica notre dame university interior\" width=\"222\" height=\"151\" \/>spaces which have fixed liturgical art and which contain objects which are not oriented to a specific time, it is perhaps less necessary (or persons are less compelled) to complement said spaces with objects which reflect a specific season.\u00a0 But, a space such as ours offers a blank canvas for interpretation.<\/p>\n<p>If we were to &#8220;decorate&#8221; for the season, It might be more \u201cliturgical,\u201d as the liturgical pioneers of the mid-twentieth century would have said, to focus on the specific readings of the Sunday, or at least the appropriate season of the liturgical year.\u00a0 Such liturgical movement advocates might have\u00a0hu<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com\/236x\/35\/b0\/13\/35b013514a19cc7657c81524a8515090.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for liturgical banner alpha and omega\" width=\"168\" height=\"251\" \/>ng\u00a0banners in solid colors, perhaps adorned with strong liturgical symbols (alpha and omega, or grain and grapes,\u00a0<em>etc<\/em>.).\u00a0 Still other liturgists might have argued that\u00a0the space should remain exactly what it was designed to be:\u00a0with clean whites and wood allowing the Word and Sacrament to echo through the People of God&#8230;unhindered by the potted plant life of the world.<\/p>\n<p>I may not have good solutions, but, in the meantime, I\u2019ll work on not judging, but giving thanks and finding joy in our own parish\u2019s creativity as we negotiate the twining seasons of liturgical year and a misty Mid-western November.\u00a0 And, in the meantime, a Merry Pumpkin Pine and Palm Tree to you!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes strange things happen\u2026like pumpkins and pine trees and palms\u2026all in the same weekend.
