Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig , formerly prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), has written for La Nuova Bussola Quotidiana<\/em> that what is considered the Reformation of Martin Luther is actually a revolution and \u201cagainst the Holy Spirit,”\u00a0KathPress<\/em> from Austria<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n

The goal behind the wish for good relationships to non-Catholics can only be to lead them to full union with the Catholic hierarchy through their acceptance of the \u201capostolic tradition according to Catholic teaching.\u201d<\/p>\n

M\u00fcller argues that Luther did not merely have the intention of fighting against some abuses concerning indulgences or the \u201csins of the Renaissance church.\u201d From Luther\u2019s writings it is \u201cabsolutely clear the Luther abandoned all principles of Catholic faith.\u201d He replaced the \u201cobjective reality of the sacraments with subjective faith.\u201d One cannot consider the Reformation as \u201cchurch reform in the Catholic sense\u201d because of the abolishing of five sacraments, the denial of the Eucharist, and the critique of the notion of church office.<\/p>\n

Many speak \u201ctoo enthusiastically\u201d about Luther according to M\u00fcller. This is caused by lack of knowledge of Luther\u2019s theology, his polemics, and the \u201cdisastrous consequences of this movement, which for millions of Christians means the destruction of unity with the Catholic Church.\u201d Although one should acknowledge the working of the Holy Spirit among non-Catholic Christians, reconciliation must not occur \u201cat the cost of the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

There can be no dialogue with Protestants about the substance of the doctrines of the faith. Otherwise it would mean that \u201cfor more than a thousand years\u201d the church \u201ctaught error; but we know \u2013 and this is a core element of the doctrine of the faith \u2013 that the Church cannot err in her transmission of salvation in the sacraments.\u201d<\/p>\n

M\u00fcller lamented \u201cconfusion\u201d about the binding quality of Catholic teaching. Many consider \u201cthe pope infallible when he speaks privately,\u201d but put up for discussion what \u201cthe popes of all of history\u201d have held as the substance of the faith.<\/p>\n

M\u00fcller was not renewed as prefect of the CDF this past June by Pope Francis at the expiration of his five-year term.<\/p>\n
