Note: Throughout the month of October, leading up to the 500th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of the legendary date of the outbreak of the Reformation on October 31, 1517,\u00a0<\/em>Pray Tell\u00a0is publishing writings of Martin Luther reflecting his beliefs at various points in his life. Today we present a literal translation of Luther’s famous hymn\u00a0<\/em>Ein’ feste Burg ist unser Gott.<\/p>\n

A firm fortress is our God,
\na good defense and armament.
\nHe helps and frees us from all danger
\nthat has yet beset us.
\nThe ancient evil foe
\nnow has serious intention,
\ngreat power and much cunning,
\non earth is nothing equal.<\/p>\n

Our power can do nothing,
\nwe soon are entirely lost;
\nthe righteous man fights for us,
\nwhom God himself has chosen.
\nDo you ask who this is?
\nHe is Jesus Christ,
\nthe Lord of hosts,
\nthere is no other god,
\nhe will surely secure the field.<\/p>\n

And if the world were full of devils,
\nand they wished to devour us entirely,
\nthen fear we not at all,
\nwe will indeed succeed.
\nThe prince of this world,
\nhow acerbic he presents himself,
\nbut yet he does nothing to us;
\nit is done, he is judged:
\none little word is able to fell him.<\/p>\n

Now let the Word stand secure
\nand have no thanks for this;
\nGod is with us according to plan
\nwith his Spirit and gifts.
\nIf they take away body,
\npossessions, honor, child and wife,
\nand send us to the hereafter,
\nthey have no accomplishment,
\nthe Kingdom yet stands for us.
