{"id":38970,"date":"2017-10-29T01:00:50","date_gmt":"2017-10-29T06:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=38970"},"modified":"2017-10-30T06:16:54","modified_gmt":"2017-10-30T11:16:54","slug":"reformation-new-eyes-ears-heart-spirit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2017\/10\/29\/reformation-new-eyes-ears-heart-spirit\/","title":{"rendered":"Reformation: New Eyes, Ears, Heart, Spirit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Lorraine Brugh<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Living in Cambridge, England during this Reformation anniversary has given me some:<\/p>\n<p>new <strong>eyes<\/strong> . . .<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday after the eucharist we spoke with the preacher, Rev&#8217;d Carol Barrett Ford, Chaplain at St. John\u2019s College. My husband and I were noting how much more subdued the Reformation anniversary seems here than in the US. She pointed out that here in the Cambridge Colleges much blood was spilled over those reforming years. In fact, in the upper chapel at St. Michael\u2019s, just across the street from St. John\u2019s, one can still <strong>see <\/strong>the remnants of blood on the walls. St. John\u2019s founder, John Fisher, was executed for opposing King Henry VIII.<\/p>\n<p>new <strong>ears . . .<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The choir of men and boys at St. John\u2019s College is one of England\u2019s finest Anglican choirs. Precise and yet ethereal was a Gregorian plainsong Kyrie they led. The rest of the mass was a setting by Thomas Tallis, himself a Reformation-era composer. He remained Roman Catholic while the religious controversies swirled around him. I could <strong>hear <\/strong>the purity of Tallis\u2019 \u201cLamb of God\u201d that filled this Anglican chapel.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>new heart<\/strong> I will give you, and a <strong>new spirit<\/strong> I will put within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:26<\/p>\n<p>We hear these words from Ezekiel 36 at the Easter Vigil each year. Even new eyes and ears can\u2019t guarantee a new heart and spirit. If there is any good the Reformation leaves us, it is the reminder that we rise each day in the new life God gives us. This baptismal life renews us, offering us again and again the <strong>new heart<\/strong> and <strong>new spirit<\/strong> God yearns for us to receive.<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-38971 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/LorraineBrugh2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"252\" \/>Lorraine S. Brugh is the\u00a0Frederick J. Kruse Endowed Chair in Church Music at Valparaiso University. Professor Brugh\u00a0helped lead the development of the ELCA\u2019s\u00a0Evangelical Lutheran Worship\u00a0and is <\/em>co-author<em> of\u00a0The Sunday Assembly, published in 2008 to help church leaders incorporate the hymnal\u2019s materials into worship services.
