{"id":38337,"date":"2017-10-03T06:15:27","date_gmt":"2017-10-03T11:15:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=38337"},"modified":"2017-10-04T06:51:11","modified_gmt":"2017-10-04T11:51:11","slug":"martin-luther-on-communion-under-both-forms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2017\/10\/03\/martin-luther-on-communion-under-both-forms\/","title":{"rendered":"Martin Luther on Communion under Both Forms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Note: Throughout the month of October, leading up to the 500<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of the legendary date of the outbreak of the Reformation on October 31, 1517,\u00a0<\/em>Pray Tell<em>\u00a0will publish writings of Martin Luther reflecting his beliefs on liturgy and sacraments at various points in his life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>From Luther\u2019s <em>Formula Missae<\/em> (1523):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It remains to be considered whether both forms,\u00a0as they call them, should be administered to the people. Here I say this: Now that the gospel has been instilled among us these two whole years, we have humored the weak in faith long enough. Hereafter we shall act according to the words of St. Paul, \u201cIf any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant\u201d [I Cor.\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\"><span class=\"aQJ\">14:38<\/span><\/span>]. For if after all this time they have not understood the gospel, it matters little whether they receive either form. If we continue to make allowance for their weakness, we only run the risk of confirming their obstinacy and of making rules contrary to the gospel. Wherefore, both forms may be requested and shall be offered in simple compliance with the institution of Christ.
