{"id":37685,"date":"2017-09-10T18:23:34","date_gmt":"2017-09-10T23:23:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=37685"},"modified":"2022-11-07T22:28:41","modified_gmt":"2022-11-08T04:28:41","slug":"in-conversation-on-the-motu-proprio-bishop-christopher-coyne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2017\/09\/10\/in-conversation-on-the-motu-proprio-bishop-christopher-coyne\/","title":{"rendered":"In Conversation on the Motu Proprio: Bishop Coyne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Bishop Christopher Coyne is the Catholic bishop of Burlington, Vermont. <\/em>Pray Tell<em> reached out to him for his thoughts on Pope Francis\u2019s recent motu proprio, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2017\/09\/09\/documentation-magnum-principium\/\">Magnum Principium,<\/a><em> which gives primary responsibility for liturgical translations back to bishops\u2019 conferences.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>PTB: What effect do you think the Pope\u2019s motu proprio will have?<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>CC: <\/strong>At this point, any effect that <em>Magnum Principium<\/em> will have on the work of the Conference will probably be with those documents that are only in the early stages of translation work, and new texts for saints days and votive Masses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PTB: What about the Liturgy of the Hours?<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-37688 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Coyne-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"186\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>CC: <\/strong>The new translation of the Liturgy of the Hours may be too far down the pipeline to start over. This would pretty much follow the decision that was made when Pope Francis first called for a review of the norms of LA <em>[Liturgiam authenticam, the 2001 document which gave Rome centralized authority over translations \u2013 ed.] <\/em>and would affect both the work of English and Spanish translation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PTB: So, not much change?<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">CC: <\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Who knows where the new norms will lead us? I currently serve on the Committee for Divine Worship under Archbishop <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">[Wilton]<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> Gregory\u2019s leadership and I know that he is not \u201cagenda driven.\u201d We are just trying to get good liturgical translations completed and approved that are faithful to the <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">editio typica<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">[official Latin edition \u2013 ed.] <\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">while being pastorally and liturgically useful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>PTB: What about the Missal? There are people who want to see that text improved.<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>CC:<\/strong> I only speak for myself. While I would be open to a discussion of a possible new translation of the Missal, I\u2019m not sure about the timing. I think we need to live with the text we have for a few more years and evaluate the translation in a way that is thoughtful, honest, and not agenda driven or divisive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PTB: So it\u2019s not your first priority?<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">CC: <\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Right now as a Conference we have so many other things of greater import to deal with &#8211; a divided and angry nation, immigration reform, the protection of human life, the promotion of marriage and support of families, but most especially the rapidly expanding loss of membership. People are leaving the Catholic Church, especially young people, and they are not coming back. This is a matter of incredible import because it is a matter of salvation. So, yes, I think the translation of liturgical texts is important, but it is not high on my priority list. I am worried about a future in which these texts would be used in empty churches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>PTB: Thank you for the conversation, Bishop Coyne.
