{"id":37619,"date":"2017-09-08T10:15:25","date_gmt":"2017-09-08T15:15:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=37619"},"modified":"2017-09-10T10:06:58","modified_gmt":"2017-09-10T15:06:58","slug":"god-said-it-was-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2017\/09\/08\/god-said-it-was-good\/","title":{"rendered":"God Said It Was Good"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another fresh Fall semester at my university brings the busy buzz of construction equipment, bright cool mornings which tinge the trees, and loads of first-year college students, nurturing varying degrees of desire for taking Introduction to Christian Theology.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-HLKGLTU2YY8\/TtmWe_cRZTI\/AAAAAAAAEog\/fQm2cs4cFYo\/s1600\/IMG_0335-HDR2.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for trees Marian University Indianapolis\" width=\"249\" height=\"166\" \/>Within the first weeks of my Intro to Theology course, we do a comparative reading of Genesis 1 and 2.\u00a0 Each year, I delight in the dawning recognition\u2014which I remember in myself so well in my own first-year theology classroom experience\u2014that <em>two <\/em>creation accounts exist, side-by-side.<\/p>\n<p>Students tend to notice similar trends from year to year\u2014the difference in the order of creation, the \u201corderliness\u201d of the Priestly account in Genesis 1, and the somewhat \u201crandom details\u201d which show up in Genesis 2\u2019s Jahwist account.\u00a0 They notice the difference in how God\/Lord God is named, and how the humans first appear.\u00a0 We discuss how the two separate accounts have something to teach us not only about God, but about theological anthropology\u2014about how humans relate with God and each other.<\/p>\n<p>This year, one of my sections was particularly interested in the power of God\u2019s speech in Genesis 1:\u00a0 God speaks and something happens.\u00a0 Most of us have heard this pattern so frequently, we hear it as a well-worn song:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Then God said: Let there be light, and there was light.\u00a0God saw that the light was good. God then separated the light from the darkness. <strong><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>God called the light \u201cday,\u201d and the darkness he called \u201cnight.\u201d Evening came, and morning followed\u2014the first day. (Genesis 1: 3-5, NABRE).\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRe7eap3DfsFj4ta-Ub_Uh-sEFsyfp8WN4wiUm7k8bwBMQF9h1UlQ\" alt=\"Image result for creation of light\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the midst of this conversation about God\u2019s speech, however, one student pointed out something new to me\u2014something that spoke so loudly I saw a new thing springing forth.\u00a0 The student observed: \u201cGod stops after each creation, and says that it\u2019s good. \u00a0Maybe God is trying to model something for us.\u00a0 Maybe we should also pause after we do something, and take time to admire it, and think of it as good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My immediate thought: what perfectionist ever stopped after completing a task and actually acknowledged what he or she did was GOOD?\u00a0 EVER?<\/p>\n<p>All of us in class were struck by the student\u2019s observation\u2014in part because I think we\u2019re used to hearing the \u201csong\u201d of Genesis 1 harp on the beauty and goodness of creation\u2014itself an important claim, particularly in the midst of suffering, destruction, and evil.\u00a0 Attending to the <em>process<\/em> through which God created, however, in taking <em>time and space<\/em> to acknowledge this goodness, changes the focus.\u00a0 In order to claim something is good, including ourselves, we need space, quiet, time, and opportunity for reflection.\u00a0 To do so demands that we take a certain amount of freedom in releasing ourselves from the spinning wheel of endless tasks.\u00a0 We are asked to be still, and be grateful that something we did, or said, or made\u2026was good.\u00a0 What a simple way to model what God might ask\u2026and what a difficult thing for so many of us (including me) to do.<\/p>\n<p>It is always a gift to be broken out of our well-trodden assumptions about a text, or well-established habits of never being satisfied with work we have accomplished.\u00a0 The next challenge will be to see if I can pause for a moment, or many moments, within a day, and remember that God calls us to remember \u201cit is good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What perfectionist ever stopped after completing a task and actually acknowledged what he or she did was GOOD?
