{"id":37533,"date":"2017-09-06T20:02:45","date_gmt":"2017-09-07T01:02:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=37533"},"modified":"2017-09-09T08:12:38","modified_gmt":"2017-09-09T13:12:38","slug":"east-meets-west-in-this-chinese-italian-church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2017\/09\/06\/east-meets-west-in-this-chinese-italian-church\/","title":{"rendered":"East meets West in this Chinese-Italian Church"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This past weekend, I had the pleasure of visiting St. Therese Chinese Catholic Church, a historic church in the heart of Chicago\u2019s Chinatown.\u00a0 The space is a mix of old and new, full of symbols from past and present communities worshiping there.<\/p>\n<p>The facade of the rectory and its accompanying garden is decidedly East Asian but the interior of the church gives away its Italian past.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37540\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_6847.jpg\" alt=\"St Therese Chinese Catholic Church Chicago\" width=\"1063\" height=\"797\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What I found most interesting was how the newer Chinese community found ways to integrate symbols of their tradition into the space they inherited. There are painted Chinese characters above each Roman arch lining both sides of the nave.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37538\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_6844.jpg\" alt=\"St Therese Chinese Catholic Church Chicago Nave\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><br \/>\nTwo banners with Chinese calligraphy frame the sanctuary and all liturgical furnishings follow traditional Chinese designs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37537\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_6842.jpg\" alt=\"Main sanctuary at St Therese Chinese Catholic Church\" width=\"3948\" height=\"2961\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Carved into the altar&#8217;s front legs are images of the the sacrifice of Isaac (left) and sacrifice of the Mass (right).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37535 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_6838.jpg\" alt=\"Chinese Altar Carving \" width=\"289\" height=\"385\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37541 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_6839.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"289\" height=\"385\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Most strikingly, there is a Chinese Tablet commemorating Chinese ancestors\u2014yes, akin to the tablet of the famed Chinese Rites controversy!
