{"id":3742,"date":"2010-08-18T11:51:43","date_gmt":"2010-08-18T16:51:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=3742"},"modified":"2010-12-27T00:03:53","modified_gmt":"2010-12-27T06:03:53","slug":"submissions-for-new-rcacrc-hymnal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2010\/08\/18\/submissions-for-new-rcacrc-hymnal\/","title":{"rendered":"Submissions for new RCA\/CRC hymnal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some of you are musicians and text writers, others of you are in a position to know someone who is and I wanted to let people know of the following opportunity.\u00a0Faith Alive Christian Resources\u00a0and the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship\u00a0are currently working on a Psalter\u00a0 which will include multiple settings of each psalm.\u00a0 The most fitting of those settings will be included in\u00a0a new hymnal for the Reformed Church in America and the Christian Reformed Church (and beyond)\u00a0with each of the 150 psalms represented.<\/p>\n<p>While we are open to submissions on any psalm (or hymn\/song)\u00a0the following is a wish list of\u00a0psalm settings\u00a0we\u00a0are particularly interested in.\u00a0 Please pass this information on to any text\/tune writers you may know.\u00a0 The deadline for submissions is the end of December 2010.\u00a0 <strong>Before you\u00a0submit any material\u00a0please do read the instructions for submissions found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crcna.org\/pages\/hymnal.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">here <\/a><\/strong><strong>and note the 5 song maximum. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rev. Joyce Borger<br \/>\nEditor, Reformed Worship &#8211; Worship and Music<br \/>\nFaith Alive Christian Resources<\/p>\n<p>Phone: 616-224-0763 or 1-800-333-8300<br \/>\nFax: 616-224-0834<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8212;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 2<\/strong> Looking for a scripted text with multiple refrains that can be used for different seasons (e.g. Epiphany, Transfiguration, Easter, Justice, Sovereignty of God).\u00a0 For examples of existing scripted texts, see Hal Hopson\u2019s work in Psalms and Canticles for Singing [colloquium binder p. 38] or Calvin Seerveld\u2019s rendition in Voicing the Psalms.\u00a0 Think in terms of how Psalm 2 is quoted in the New Testament.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 7<\/strong> Looking for a setting in any form or genre.\u00a0 Particularly interested in a setting that traces the turns in the psalm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 9\/10<\/strong> Setting of these psalms as a unit which deals with the relationship of God as Sovereign with the plight of the vulnerable and the poor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 14<\/strong> Perhaps a Romans 3 (see vv. 10, 23-24) pairing with Psalm 14.\u00a0 Perhaps Psalm 14:3 and 7 could provide refrain material.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 21<\/strong> Perhaps a new metrical versification.\u00a0 A setting could find inspiration from a Handel \u201cCoronation anthem\u201d with an eye toward an Easter context.\u00a0 Verses 8-12 could be conflated into a single stanza.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 35<\/strong> Looking for a setting of Psalm 35 that points to its liturgical use.\u00a0 Perhaps this attempt might prime the pump for a new text of lament and\/or confession for the ills of slander and gossip.\u00a0 Perhaps a sequence could be achieved:<br \/>\n* portion of the psalm [lament] with refrain<br \/>\n* composed prayer[s]<br \/>\nOptions<br \/>\nA (prayer for those slandered)<br \/>\nRighteous God, we prayer for your servant(s) (N.) who endure(s) slander\u00a0\u00a0 . . . .<br \/>\nB (confession)<br \/>\nRighteous God, we often are idle witnesses, and sometimes we conceive of and profit from deceitful words . . . .<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 57<\/strong> We are looking for a new tune (6.6.8.6) to carry this text by Michael Parry:<br \/>\nBe gracious to me, Lord<br \/>\nand hold my spirit fast,<br \/>\nthat I may shelter by your side<br \/>\nuntil the storm is past.<\/p>\n<p>Though snares are set for me,<br \/>\nyet I will sleep in peace,<br \/>\nfor I have asked the care of God<br \/>\nwhose love shall never cease.<\/p>\n<p>My soul, awake and sing\u2014<br \/>\nsuch boundless love recall,<br \/>\nexalt God\u2019s name above the skies,<br \/>\nGod\u2019s glory over all!<br \/>\n\u00a91973, USA \u00a91983 by Hope Publishing Co.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 64<\/strong> Open to any fresh approach to this psalm in any genre.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 68<\/strong> We are interested in a new versification of verses 19-35 to the tune of Genevan 68, set in 4 stanzas, give or take.\u00a0 The meter of this majestic psalm melody is 887 887 D, but you would do well to compose text with both the melody and meter in mind.\u00a0 The concept that we are working with is beginning with a dramatic reading of Psalm 68:1-18 (or portions thereof), perhaps with an optional sung refrain appropriate for Easter or Ascension.\u00a0 (A possible refrain text, sung to the opening melody of Genevan 68:<br \/>\nLift up your voices, shout and sing!<br \/>\nHail! The procession of your King:<br \/>\nThe Lord of hosts is risen!)<br \/>\nThis spoken reading then breaks into song at verse 19 \u201cBlessed be the Lord, who daily bears us up . . . .\u201d\u00a0 The versification should be able to either follow the dramatic reading, or stand alone.\u00a0 Visualize the procession of all lands in the train of the God who arises in awesome power . . . .\u00a0 We think the Genevan melody captures this, but that a fresh metrical setting beginning at verse 19 may better convey this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 77<\/strong> Here is another Genevan melody that we\u2019d like to retain but we think it could be fused with more modern sounds.\u00a0 (To hear a Dutch group render this tune in a contemporary band idiom, see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bethel.nl\/mediaspeler\/2010\/05\/concert-the-psalm-project\/\" target=\"_blank\">video of Psalm Project<\/a> .\u00a0 The entire video may be of interest to you.\u00a0 You\u2019ll find the melody in question beginning at 13:33.\u00a0 On the video this is Psalm 86, but the melody is the same as Genevan 77.)\u00a0 Perhaps a fresh approach to the versification of this psalm might help this melody and psalm take root.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 85<\/strong> Perhaps a new metrical setting to the tune Une Jeune Pucelle (often appears in hymnals with the text: \u2018Twas in the Moon of Wintertime\u201d).\u00a0 Psalm 80 is set as a responsive reading with a sung refrain to Une Jeune Pucelle in the collection Sing! A New Creation.\u00a0 (#100)\u00a0 For the hymnal project we\u2019d like to retain responsive reading\/refrain the setting of Psalm 80, but perhaps set this beside a metrical setting of Psalm 85 making full use of the melody.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 87<\/strong> Create a \u201cEugene Peterson-esque\u201d paraphrase of the psalm for scripted reading that can be framed by a musical refrain.\u00a0 The music should be in a distinctly global voice.\u00a0 Celebrate in this interpretation of Psalm 87 the naming of the nations\u2014these are born in the city of God.\u00a0 Keep in mind possible liturgical uses, e.g. a Pentecost setting, or world-wide communion Sunday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 106<\/strong> Greatest hits of idolatry!\u00a0 Looking for a setting that \u2018contemporizes\u2019 idolatry.\u00a0 E.g., one could go verse by verse from the historical to today.\u00a0 Take the cue from verse 6\u2014we have sinned just as our ancestors have sinned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 107<br \/>\n<\/strong>Create a reading with a double [sung?] refrain.<br \/>\nA\u00a0 Then they cried out . . .<br \/>\nB\u00a0 Let us give thanks . . .<br \/>\nThe reading weaves in and out of these two refrain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 124<\/strong> Across the spectrum of Reformed churches there are many congregations which begin worship with the speaking of Psalm 124 verse 8:\u00a0 \u201cOur help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.\u201d\u00a0 This is the last verse in the psalm and often gets buried in our metrical settings.\u00a0 Consider the melody of Genevan 124 (#124 in the Psalter Hymnal, #236 in the Presbyterian Hymnal).\u00a0 Could we have a new metrical version of this psalm which places the \u2018votum\u2019 (\u201cOur help . . .\u201d) as stanza 1, a sort of preamble to the psalm?\u00a0 Perhaps just this stanza could be set in such a way that is responsive, leader singing a portion and congregation responding.\u00a0 Imagine a congregation that will use this single stanza on a regular basis for the beginning of worship.\u00a0 This preamble verse, perhaps set in italics on the page, could be followed by a metrical setting of the psalm as a whole.\u00a0 Think in terms of Isaac Watts\u2019 setting of Psalm 98 \u201cJoy to the World, the Lord is Come.\u201d\u00a0 Watts pulls the heart of the psalm to the front.\u00a0 The setting does not follow the \u2018order\u2019 of the verses as they appear in the Psalm, but through reordering captures a true sense of the psalm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 132<\/strong> What if this psalm appeared in the Advent or Christmas section of a hymnal opposite the carol \u201cOnce in Royal David\u2019s City?\u201d\u00a0 Consider versifying this psalm to the tune Irby (87 87 77) through the lens of the incarnation.\u00a0 \u201cOne of your descendents I will put on your throne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 146<\/strong> Isaac Watts\u2019 setting of Psalm 146 appears in many denominational hymnals: \u201cI\u2019ll Praise My Maker While I\u2019ve Breath.\u201d\u00a0 (Presbyterian Hymnal #253)\u00a0 Is anyone else troubled by some of the potentially dualistic language that ensues?\u00a0 E.g., \u201cand when my voice is lost in death, praise shall employ my nobler powers.\u201d\u00a0 Would anyone be interested in a reworking of Watts?\u00a0 Or a completely fresh approach to Psalm 146, perhaps keeping the opening line: \u201cI\u2019ll Praise My Maker\u201d?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 150<\/strong> Genevan 150 is a fantastic tune that we\u2019d like to include in our Psalter.\u00a0 (See Psalter Hymnal #150)\u00a0 We are open to a fresh versification to match this melody<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Faith Alive Christian Resources and the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship are currently working on a Psalter  which will include multiple settings of each psalm. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":29,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_feature_clip_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[7,22],"tags":[107,937],"class_list":["post-3742","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-announcements","category-music-hymns","tag-calvin-institute-of-christian-worship","tag-reformed-church-in-america"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
