{"id":36896,"date":"2017-07-24T14:02:48","date_gmt":"2017-07-24T19:02:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=36896"},"modified":"2017-07-24T14:02:48","modified_gmt":"2017-07-24T19:02:48","slug":"the-sunday-obligation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2017\/07\/24\/the-sunday-obligation\/","title":{"rendered":"The Sunday Obligation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently had the opportunity to read Nicholas Wolterstorff, <em>The God We Worship: An Exploration of Liturgical Theology<\/em> (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2015).\u00a0 I offer here some excerpts from the book followed by some comments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe church enacts liturgy not to satisfy the needs and desire of individual congregants but to worship God.\u201d (p. 11)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is surely too weak to say that it is a good and joyful thing for the church to assemble to enact the liturgy.\u00a0 Assembling to enact the liturgy is something the church <em>ought<\/em> to do; it is its bounden duty.\u00a0 Should it fail to do so, it would be guilty of wrongdoing.\u201d (p. 42)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s true, indeed, that we typically say to someone that he is obligated to do so-and-so only when it appears that he is inclined not to do it.\u00a0 But from this it does not follow that when he <em>is<\/em> inclined to do it, he is not obligated to do so.\u201d (p. 43)<\/p>\n<p>Exhortations to gather on the Day of the Lord go back at least as far as chapter 14 of the <em>Didache<\/em>.\u00a0 Later, chapter 13 of the <em>Didascalia Apostolorum<\/em> memorably directs readers: \u201cBe not then neglectful of yourselves, and deprive not our Saviour of His members, and do not rend and scatter His body. And make not your worldly affairs of more account than the word of God; but on the Lord\u2019s day leave every thing and run eagerly to your Church; for she is your glory.\u201d*\u00a0 For Catholics, the obligation to participate in Mass on Sundays and days of obligation is spelled out in no. 2180 of the <em>Catechism<\/em>, quoting no. 1247 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law.<\/p>\n<p>Given these encouragements \/ directives, it seems to me that part of what Wolterstorff is pointing to is captured in Preface IV of weekdays, presented here in the 1975 and the 2011 translations.<\/p>\n<p>1975<\/p>\n<p>Father, all-powerful and ever-living God,<\/p>\n<p>we do well always and everywhere to give you thanks.<\/p>\n<p>You have no need of our praise,<\/p>\n<p>yet our desire to thank you is itself your gift.<\/p>\n<p>Our prayer of thanksgiving adds nothing to your greatness,<\/p>\n<p>but makes us grow in your grace,<\/p>\n<p>through Jesus Christ our Lord.<\/p>\n<p>In our joy we sing to your glory<\/p>\n<p>with all the choirs of angels . . .<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2011<\/p>\n<p>It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,<\/p>\n<p>always and everywhere to give you thanks,<\/p>\n<p>Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.<\/p>\n<p>For, although you have no need of our praise,<\/p>\n<p>yet our thanksgiving is itself your gift,<\/p>\n<p>since our praises add nothing to your greatness<\/p>\n<p>but profit us for our salvation,<\/p>\n<p>through Christ our Lord.<\/p>\n<p>And so, in company with the choirs of Angels,<\/p>\n<p>we praise you, and with joy we proclaim . . .<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The texts give voice to the sense that praising and thanking God is an obligation.\u00a0 At the same time, God in Godself has \u201cno need\u201d for this praise and thanksgiving.\u00a0 Rather, offering praise and thanks to God \u201cmakes <em>us<\/em> grow\u201d in God\u2019s grace.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if our parishes might emphasize the idea that Christians gather on Sunday in response to what God has already done \/ what God is doing.\u00a0 Assembling on Sunday is not something Christians undertake entirely on their own initiative.\u00a0 At the risk of complicating things, I wonder whether announcers at the beginning of Mass might say something like this: \u201cWelcome to the parish of St. ____.\u00a0 In response to God\u2019s summons, we celebrate today the (number) Sunday of Ordinary Time \/ Lent \/ Easter \/ Advent \/ Christmas.\u00a0 We gather in song by singing _____.\u00a0 Please stand.\u201d\u00a0 My suggestion here is simply a template and I am by no means attached to this particular phrasing.<\/p>\n<p>Your thoughts?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Text at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earlychristianwritings.com\/text\/didascalia.html\">http:\/\/www.earlychristianwritings.com\/text\/didascalia.html<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wonder if our parishes might emphasize the idea that Christians gather on Sunday in response to what God has already done \/ what God is doing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":52,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2},"_wpas_customize_per_network":false},"categories":[3118,19],"tags":[2988],"class_list":["post-36896","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-ars-celebrandi-new-ws","category-mass","tag-sunday-obligation"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
