Did you see that Cardinal Tagle recently admonished his priests<\/a> not to say \u201cGood morning\u201d to the congregation?<\/p>\n

Couldn\u2019t agree more. As the cardinal points out:<\/p>\n

\u201cIs not the expression \u2018The Lord be with you\u2019 more than enough?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Exactly right. There is no good reason to detract from the power of that hallowed liturgical greeting with your petty conviviality.<\/p>\n

And while we\u2019re on the topic of liturgical unnecessities, here\u2019s another one:<\/p>\n

\u201cMay the Body and Blood of Christ bring us all to everlasting life,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

said out loud by the priest before reception of Communion. This is to, you know, involve everyone in the priest\u2019s preparation.<\/p>\n

Bad idea. The Church gives us a really powerful, really beautiful line before Communion (and by the way, it got better with the new missal translation):<\/p>\n

\u201cBehold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

After a stunning line like that, there is no reason to tack on the other thing.<\/p>\n

Okay, one more. You sometimes get this before the dismissal:<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks, everyone, for coming out to worship today, and for your great participation in this Mass.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Memo to presiders: They didn\u2019t come on your account \u2013 it\u2019s not your<\/em> liturgy \u2013 and it\u2019s not your place to thank them for having worshiped their God.<\/p>\n

Have a blessed Lord\u2019s day, everyone.<\/p>\n
