{"id":36394,"date":"2017-04-24T10:19:07","date_gmt":"2017-04-24T15:19:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=36394"},"modified":"2017-04-24T10:20:10","modified_gmt":"2017-04-24T15:20:10","slug":"organ-repertoire-why-catholics-dont-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2017\/04\/24\/organ-repertoire-why-catholics-dont-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Organ Repertoire: Why Catholics Don&#8217;t Care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was asked by a student today, \u201cI just don\u2019t understand why we need to have organ repertoire.\u00a0 When would you ever use it?\u201d\u00a0 I stared at the student, confounded, dumbfounded.\u00a0 And then I had an intense moment of Catholic soul-searching.\u00a0 How many Catholics <em>would <\/em>understand why you\u2019d want to have organ repertoire\u2014how many Catholics ever <em>do<\/em> hear actual repertoire in the course of a liturgical celebration?\u00a0 I asked the student, \u201cHave you not ever experienced a Mass which began and ended with a prelude and postlude?\u201d\u00a0 The student said, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 (And I know this isn\u2019t true, because I play preludes and postludes here at our own University Masses, but, perhaps this student was considering personal parish experiences.)<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, this student did not <em>care<\/em>, and could not fathom why anyone <em>might <\/em>care about liturgical organ repertoire.\u00a0 But I say, how could anyone say that liturgical music <em>didn\u2019t matter<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>Such questions conjure up for many of us Thomas Day\u2019s classic text, <em>Why Catholics Can\u2019t Sing<\/em> (Crossroad, 1992).\u00a0 But, in the case of organ repertoire, I feel our title should be: <em>Why Catholics Don\u2019t Care<\/em>.\u00a0 This absolute lack of \u201ccare\u201d or understanding as to <em>why <\/em>music might elevate and complement a liturgical experience is deeply troubling to me.\u00a0 It is particularly troubling as I prepar<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-229 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.valpo.edu\/institute-of-liturgical-studies\/files\/2016\/09\/Chapel1-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Chapel1\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/>e to embark upon a pilgrimage to Valparaiso University, in Valparaiso, Indiana.<\/p>\n<p>Valparaiso University is a great advocate of church music, and of liturgical worship, and contributes to this advocacy by hosting an annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.valpo.edu\/institute-of-liturgical-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\">Institute of Liturgical Studies<\/a>.\u00a0 First convened at Valparaiso University in 1949, the Institute began, to a certain extent, as an iteration of the liturgical movement from a Lutheran perspective\u2014one which promoted sacramental life, the study of liturgical history, and ministerial practices which promoted active participation.<\/p>\n<p>Over its many decades, the Institute\u2019s program has become more ecumenical, deeply interested in pastoral practice, and devoted to renewing and refreshing the lives of ministers and, in turn, Christian congregations.\u00a0 This present year, the Institute of Liturgical Studies\u2019 69<sup>th<\/sup> session, commemorates the 500<sup>th<\/sup> Year of the Reformation, with the title: \u201cLiturgy Serving The Life of the Church: How Worship Re-forms Us.\u201d\u00a0 Far from being a celebration of divisions across our ecclesial boundaries, however, a number of Roman Catholic theologians and historians are included as plenary speakers and workshop leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from its ecumenical atmosphere, about which is cared deeply, I am also confident that both the worship\u2014and its accompan<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.valpo.edu\/student\/ago\/reddel01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"319\" height=\"210\" \/>ying repertoire\u2014will be cared about deeply, and inspire others to care deeply.\u00a0 Our worship is shaped by aesthetic experiences, and by symbols.\u00a0 The more we learn to participate in aesthetic experiences (be it singing, or prayer accompanied by an organ or other instrument), and contemplate the rich multi-valence of symbols (<em>e<\/em>.<em>g<\/em>. baptismal water, eucharistic bread and wine), the more we might be <em>changed <\/em>by our liturgical experiences.\u00a0 Just as symbols give rise to thought, music gives food to the spirit&#8230;and helps us to pray twice.<\/p>\n<p>I learned to love church music from my Protestant brothers and sisters\u2014and from my friends at places like Valparaiso University.\u00a0 I was changed by my experience of Lutherans who love music.\u00a0 My mission now is to invite other (Catholics) to see\u2026or hear\u2026why caring matters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was asked by a student today, \u201cI just don\u2019t understand why we need to have organ repertoire.
