This strong piece, \u201cWhat a Bishop Might Want to Know,\u201d was written by Thomas O\u2019Meara OP in 1994, but it has lost nothing in currency. If anything, it has become more current with the ministry of the Bishop of Rome, Pope Francis. It uncannily describes how Pope Francis preaches each day in the St. Martha guesthouse chapel, and how he approaches his ministry in general.<\/p>\n

Any bishop – indeed, any preacher, ordained or lay – might profitably use O\u2019Meara reflections to understand how Pope Francis seems to understand the ministry of preaching, and to reflect on his or her own preaching and ministry for and with the People of God.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Meara discusses six issues:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. How Jesus is the Logos and completely human. \u201cThe Gospels show that [Jesus], out of his experience, changed directions in him ministry, expanded its horizons and came to see that not only success but condemnation lay ahead\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n
  2. Moral theology. \u201cThe moral teaching of the Church cannot be presented only as rules found in Church documents.\u201d \u201cShould people expect instant answers to every new topic from the Church?\u201d<\/li>\n
  3. Expansion of ministry now underway. \u201cDiversity in ministry is central to the Church after Vatican II and seems to be the work and goal of the Holy Spirit.\u201d<\/li>\n
  4. \u201cA preacher representing the Catholic Church should discern the \u2018essence\u2019 or \u2018heart\u2019 of the Catholic spirit.\u201d \u201cWhat is the difference between Catholicism and fundamentalisms of all sorts?\u201d<\/li>\n
  5. Contact with those from non-Christian religions. \u201cThe episcopal preacher needs to have made his own something of the theology of circles of sacramentality found\u2026at Vatican II.\u201d<\/li>\n
  6. Decision-making in the Church. \u201cThe bishop needs to explain that not everything central to Christianity has been formally defined as dogma.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
