Pray Tell is grateful to America Press for its coverage<\/a> of the important news concerning the new commission that Pope Francis has established to review and re-evaluate Liturgiam authenticam.<\/p>\n

In the January 26 story by Gerard O\u2019Connell, however, we noticed a quote of something which Archbishop Arthur Roche said in 2014, which suggested that our translation principles have changed because dynamic equivalence is now “outmoded”:<\/p>\n

He [Archbishop Roche] explained that \u201cdynamic equivalence\u201d was achieved when a translator detached the \u201ccontent\u201d of an utterance from the \u201cform in which it was expressed.\u201d But this approach has become \u201coutmoded,\u201d he said. Over the last 40 years, specialists in language \u201chave become more aware that the form we choose for an utterance is itself expressive of our purpose in speaking.\u201d The Holy See in \u201cLiturgiam Authenticam\u201d\u00a0<\/em>opted for \u201cthe formal equivalence,\u201d he stated.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Pray Tell challenged this talking point back in 2011 by consulting a specialist in translation.<\/p>\n

In a June 6 post entitled \u201cAcademic Justification for Liturgiam Authenticam?\u201dAnthony Pym, President of the European Society for Translation Studies, wrote:<\/p>\n

I am asked by the\u00a0Pray Tell\u00a0<\/em>moderator\u00a0<\/em>if\u00a0academic translation theory has changed in recent decades. Without any doubt, it has.<\/p>\n

I am asked if the changes support greater literalism, as has been claimed in the debate over 2001 Vatican document\u00a0Liturgiam authenticam<\/em>. My answer is a resounding \u201cHuh??<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He goes on to describe several schools of thought that have developed in translation theory, but tempers any easy dismissal of \u201cdynamic equivalence\u201d with this summary statement:<\/p>\n

Does this mean that we are all reacting against Eugene Nida and his concept of dynamic equivalence, supposedly embodied in the prior doctrine of\u00a0Comme le prevoit<\/em>\u00a0in 1969? Not at all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
