{"id":35211,"date":"2016-12-23T09:52:04","date_gmt":"2016-12-23T15:52:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=35211"},"modified":"2016-12-23T09:53:01","modified_gmt":"2016-12-23T15:53:01","slug":"do-you-hate-christmas-presents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2016\/12\/23\/do-you-hate-christmas-presents\/","title":{"rendered":"Do You Hate Christmas Presents?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The last couple of years, I\u2019ve started to dread the so-called \u201chappy holiday season.\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019m not grouchy because I\u2019m a stereotypical \u201cgrinch.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve always loved mysterious, already-but-not-yet Advent, and Christmas Eve is my favorite day of the year.\u00a0 I love our spiced-ginger cookies and family traditions.\u00a0 I love our visits with friends, and decorating the church with bright red poinsettias.<\/p>\n<p>But, I\u2019ve been struggling with my Advents of late.\u00a0 The gift-giving rubrics cube of: 1) procuring appropriately priced, thoughtful, and useful gifts; 2) distributing said gifts among family members of widely varying tastes, ages, and predilections; 3) and maintaining an approximately equal amount of spent dollars across all recipients, is weighing me down.\u00a0 \u00a0How can I ponder the Incarnation during the Advent Season while I\u2019m standing in the big box store with \u201cBaby It\u2019s Cold Outside\u201d blaring?<\/p>\n<p>As an act of resistance to \u201cSanta Claus\u2019s Coming to Town\u201d on October 31<sup>st<\/sup>, my husband and I sought to limit our gift-giving this year.\u00a0 We talked over <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Christmas-Tree-Close-UP-2016.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-35212 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Christmas-Tree-Close-UP-2016.jpg\" alt=\"christmas-tree-close-up-2016\" width=\"122\" height=\"218\" \/><\/a>our own \u201climits\u201d on gifts for each other, and soberly discussed how we could \u201cpair down\u201d the expectations of our gift recipients.\u00a0 Yet, as I look under our wire-and-plastic tree (a truly vintage piece, c. 1965!), the wrapped boxes and bows are piled embarrassingly deep and wide.\u00a0 How can we have so much when so many in the world have so little?\u00a0 What are we giving?\u00a0 Why do we give?\u00a0 \u00a0I ponder these questions while eating those spiced-ginger cookies.<\/p>\n<p>Looking up from my cookies and out my kitchen window on my cold Indiana landscape this O Antiphons morning, I can see sparrows flocking through the yard, hovering in the bare trees.\u00a0 We feed them, so that\u2019s why they\u2019r<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTBviTO6_oP4pgqQp3yCHhS2JGirtE6Mo7E4Dai3EK0W6QGyXgi\" alt=\"Sparrows in Snow\" width=\"255\" height=\"198\" \/>e there\u2014but I always marvel at the tiny sparrows who buzz and hum with delight at the simplest gifts of tree-cover and a few seeds of millet in a little plastic feeder.\u00a0 The sparrows approach each day with joy, eating rich fare with delight, and fly peacefully into our spruce tree, full of hope that there will still be food tomorrow.\u00a0 Our small kindness in scattering seed has spread to a flock-ful of God\u2019s creatures\u2014and we know that God cares for even the lowliest sparrow (Matthew 10:29).<\/p>\n<p>How we approach Christmas is, largely, a choice.\u00a0 We can choose to see the glittery bits of metal and desirable plastic objects; we can choose to impress our friends, family, and co-workers with the dollar signs we spend on our loved ones.\u00a0 We can choose to believe that \u201cAll We Want for Christmas\u201d is X, Y, or Z.\u00a0 But I\u2019d like to choose something else for my last days of Advent.\u00a0 All I want is the joy of the sparrows.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to choose peace\u2014I\u2019d like to choose kindness\u2014I\u2019d like to choose hope.\u00a0 It is my choice to bring those gifts to my Christmas tree.<\/p>\n<p>So, when I turn from my sparrow-filled spruce, buzzing with love, to my giant green pipe-cleaner nightmare, I can choose to see plastic, metal, and dollar signs.\u00a0 Or, I can choose to see what one of our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.printeryhouse.org\/imm\/CB4175.jpg\">Christmas cards<\/a>, sent by some dear friends, reminded me:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u201cSee what love the Father has given us\u2026. (1 John 3: 1)<br \/>\nWith every Christmas gift and tree<br \/>\nwe remember God\u2019s gift to us:<br \/>\nHis only Son, our Savior.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All I want is the joy of the sparrows.
