The following\u00a0comes from Br. Eric Pohlman, a monk of St. John’s Abbey. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Below\u00a0are the seven possible calendar scenarios for the Advent and Christmas seasons.<\/span><\/p>\n

Transferring Epiphany to Sunday:
\n<\/span>In scenario 2 Epiphany is already on a Sunday \u2013 no need to transfer.
\n<\/span>In scenarios 3 through 6 Epiphany is moved \u201cup\u201d to take the place of the \u201cSecond Sunday after Christmas\u201d (January 5, 4, 3, or 2).
\n<\/span>In scenarios 1 and 7 the first available Sunday is after January 6 \u2013 Epiphany then displaces Baptism of the Lord.
\n<\/span>In these years the Baptism of the Lord is instead celebrated the following day, Monday (January 8 or 9).<\/span><\/p>\n

Other interesting things for this year (scenario 7):
\n<\/span>We have the longest possible Advent \u2013 four full weeks \u2013 the first \u201cO\u201d Antiphon won\u2019t be heard until the Vigil of the 4th\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Sunday.
\n<\/span>Since Christmas Day and Mary, Mother of God (the Octave Day of Christmas) are on Sundays the feast of the Holy Family is on Friday<\/i>, December 30.
\n<\/span>The combined length of the two seasons is consistent \u00a0in six of the seven scenarios \u2013 43 days (6 weeks plus one day).
\n<\/span>A day gained in Advent is lost in the week after Epiphany as you move left to right through scenarios 2 through 7.
\n<\/span>Only in scenario 1 do the rules collude to reduce the combined length by a week \u2013 36 days (5 weeks plus one day).
\n<\/span>Five years out of seven we in the USA start Advent during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
\n<\/span>The other two years it\u2019s the feast of Christ the King.<\/span><\/p>\n

In sum:
\nThe shortest Advent scenario is number one: twenty-two days.
\nThe longest is scenario seven at twenty eight days.
\nThe shortest Christmas season is scenario number one, which is:
\nfourteen days if Epiphany stays on January 6.
\nfifteen days if \u00a0Epiphany is transferred to Sunday.
\nThe longest Christmas season is scenario number two, at twenty days.
\nThe shortest combined Advent and Christmas season is scenario number one which is:
\nthirty-six days\u00a0if Epiphany remains on January 6.
\nthirty-seven days if Epiphany\u00a0is transferred to \u00a0Sunday.
\nThe combined\u00a0Advent and Christmas season is scenarios two-seven, which is
\nforty-three days\u00a0if Epiphany remains on January 6.
\nforty-four days\u00a0if Epiphany\u00a0is transferred to \u00a0Sunday: scenario seven.<\/p>\n
