The Monks of St. John\u2019s File in for Prayer

In we shuffle, hooded amplitudes,
\nscapulared brooms, a stray earring, skin-heads
\nand flowing locks, blind in one eye,
\nhooked-nosed, handsome as a prince
\n(and knows it), a five-thumbed organist,
\nan acolyte who sings in quarter tones,
\none slightly swollen keeper of the bees,
\nthe carpenter minus a finger here and there,
\nour pre-senile writing deathless verse,
\na stranded sailor, a Cassian scholar,
\nthe artist suffering the visually
\nilliterate and indignities unnamed,
\ntwo determined liturgists. In a word,
\neager purity and weary virtue.
\nLast of all, the Lord Abbot, early old
\n(shepherding the saints is like herding cats).
\nThese chariots and steeds of Israel
\nmake a black progress into church.
\nA rumble of monks bows low and offers praise
\nto the High God of Gods who is faithful forever.<\/p>\n
