An Election Season Prayer<\/p>\n

God, I know that I don\u2019t have to get angry.
\nI don’t have to get worked up.
\nI don\u2019t have to get depressed.
\nAnd I don’t have to throw anything at the TV.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

I just have to use
\nmy conscience
\nand vote.<\/p>\n

So help me remember
\nwhat Jesus taught in the Gospels,
\nand what our church teaches,
\nespecially about the poor, the refugee, the migrant,
\nthe sick, the homeless, the unborn, the disabled,
\nthe hungry, the elderly and the lonely.<\/p>\n

Help me remember the “least” among us,
\nand help me ponder in my heart
\nhow to cast my vote for the good of all.<\/p>\n

God, I know that no candidate is perfect,
\nbecause I’m not perfect either,
\nthe last time I checked.
\nSo free me of the burden of having to
\nvote for someone who satisfies
\nall my desires for a candidate.
\nMy candidate will be imperfect,
\nlike me.<\/p>\n

Help me to be grateful for the ability to vote,
\nbecause not everyone has that privilege.<\/p>\n

And when I meet people voting for someone else,
\nHelp me to take a deep breath and
\ngive them the benefit of the doubt,
\nbecause they are following their consciences, too.<\/p>\n

Help me remember
\nthat even though they sometimes drive me nuts,
\nI don’t have to argue with them,
\nI don’t have to convince them,
\nI don’t have to hate them,
\nAnd I don’t have to demonize them.<\/p>\n

Then, after the election, help me work for unity.
\nBecause I know that\u2019s what you want.<\/p>\n
