The two processed in together fully vested; both jointly <a href=\"http:\/\/en.radiovaticana.va\/news\/2016\/10\/05\/pope_and_archbishop_welby_send_out_bishops_to_promote_unity\/1263150\">gave reflections<\/a>; both also gave the blessing together.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Blessing.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34199 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Blessing.png\" alt=\"blessing\" width=\"309\" height=\"206\" \/><\/a>Before the final blessing, Justin\u00a0took off his pectoral cross, blessed it and gave it to Francis. (See above)<\/p>\n<p>Lambeth <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archbishopofcanterbury.org\/articles.php\/5784\/archbishop-gives-cross-of-nails-to-pope-as-symbol-of-reconciliation-partnership\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Archbishop Justin took the pectoral cross from round his neck and presented it to Pope Francis during vespers &#8230;\u00a0The Pope put then put the cross round his neck&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>As he blessed the Cross of Nails, the Archbishop said: \u201cBless His Holiness Pope Francis who inspired by the Cross of Nails, bears witness to the grace and truth of your crucified and risen Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. . .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will give this Cross of Nails to His Holiness Pope Francis as a symbol of our partnership in the work of reconciliation. For the Glory of God and the coming of His kingdom of justice and peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Cross of Nails is significant in that it is a replica of the Cross of Nails forged from the ruins of Coventry Cathedral, which was firebombed in WWII and the replicas\u00a0are dedicated for peace and reconciliation of all peoples.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34198 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/img-1.jpeg\" alt=\"img-1\" width=\"319\" height=\"239\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Francis also gave Justin a replica of the pastoral staff of St. Gregory, who sent missionaries to England.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/POPE-ANGLICAN-PRAYER.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34196 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/POPE-ANGLICAN-PRAYER.jpg\" alt=\"Anglican Archbishop Justin Welby of Canterbury, England, spiritual leader of the Anglican Communion, holds a replica of the staff of St. Gregory the Great given by Pope Francis at a vespers service at the Church of St. Gregory in Rome Oct. 5. The visit focused on the common call of evangelization and mission, rather than theological differences. Today&#8217;s symbolism bore clear echoes of Paul VI giving his episcopal ring to Archbishop Ramsey in 1966. The Paul VI ring is traditionally worn when the Archbishop of Canterbury is visiting\u00a0the Vatican.<\/p>\n<p>The vespers service was the occasion for nineteen pairs of bishops, one Anglican and one Roman Catholic, to be commissioned to be sent on common mission in their respective regions.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, it included the signing of a <a href=\"http:\/\/episcopaldigitalnetwork.com\/ens\/2016\/10\/05\/common-declaration-by-pope-francis-and-archbishop-of-canterbury-justin-welby\/\">common declaration<\/a> in which both leaders reaffirmed the common call to unity and stated that they are undeterred by the &#8220;serious obstacles&#8221;
