In class, we discussed this week the meaning of the phrase “mystery of saving worship.” On p. 37 of the 1963 Sheed and Ward edition, the phrase appears: “Hence the mystery of worship, which is Christ, is at the same time our salvation: a mystery of saving worship.” A footnote at this point elaborates: “‘Mystery of worship’ is not to be understood in the narrow sense of worship as cult. Not only Jesus’ prayer, not only his entire moral and religious attitude of life, but also all his apostolic activity is worship of the Father. The complete notion of worship includes all these expressions.”

In the case of Jesus Christ, the salvation / sanctification of human beings is inextricably bound up in worship of the Father. My mind ricochets from here to the well-known dictum of Irenaeus: “The glory of God is the human being fully alive, and the life of humans is the vision of God” (AH IV, 20, 7).

As liturgists, pastors, and theologians the task is before us—always before us—of elucidating in our own lives and in the lives of the local assemblies to which we belong the vivid and vital interpenetration of worship of God and the promotion of human well-being and all that such well-being entails. Liturgists, pastors, and theologians should also have the wisdom and humility to seek and to grasp the insights into this mutual connection as they are expressed by those whose lives and careers are not marked by formal study of theology.

How have you talked or written about the promotion of human well-being as worship of God? How have others provided you with deeper appreciation of the “complete notion of worship”?

{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[1321,17,31,187,1137

post-32546","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-homilies","category-liturgical-spirituality","category-sacramental-theology","category-social-justice","category-teaching-liturgy
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
