Last week I had the pleasure of speaking at the Liturgical Composers Forum in St. Louis. Founded by John Foley, SJ, in 1998, this group has met annually since that time to build community, pray together, critique one another’s work, and consider issues of importance to liturgy and music.<\/p>\n

The first of my talks was on the history of liturgy from Vatican II to Pope Francis. The second was about liturgical music composition as mystagogy. A condensed version of the second talk will appear (God willing) in GIA quarterly sometime next year.<\/p>\n

Forty-one composers were in attendance, as well as some local staff and volunteers. The gathering was held at the Mercy Conference and Retreat Center, where hospitality and food were great. The sisters also joined us for prayer. Some Pray Tell contributors were present. Paul Inwood, Michael Joncas, and of course former contributor John Foley, were there, as were a number of people whose names we see in the comment boxes. It was wonderful to meet with everyone in person. I saw people whom I had not seen in years (Scott Soper, Rory Cooney), or see seldom (David Haas, Tom Kendzia), and got acquainted with delightful people whom I had never met before (too numerous to list).<\/p>\n

One of the things that impressed me was that as we first gathered, everyone shared something of what the past year had been like for them. It could have been merely a professional summary, but people also spoke from the heart, about families, health, and changes in their lives. It was a time of simple sharing, as among friends. Yet it was also a demonstration of Christian community. I think we need more of this among ministers in the church. The trust and care experienced in that opening event was carried through for the rest of the week.<\/p>\n

Here’s something else that might interest our readers. The group has just put out (2015) a series of three short books published by Liturgical Press. The collection is called: The Heart of Our Music<\/a><\/em> and each volume is subtitled Reflections on Liturgy and Music by Members of the Liturgical Composers Forum.<\/em><\/p>\n

The first volume is entitled:\u00a0Underpinning Our Thinking.\u00a0<\/em>The second is called\u00a0Practical Considerations.\u00a0<\/em>And the third is\u00a0Digging Deeper.\u00a0<\/em>Each contains several thought provoking essays. The volumes sell separately for $12.95; a set of three costs $29.95. Well worth a look!<\/p>\n

The essays are accessible to the general reader, but will also interest those who know something about liturgy and music–and theology–already.
