This is definitely worth a listen: \u201cWhy Catholics Can\u2019t Sing\u201d from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, produced by Noel Debien. It is a delightful romp through the checkered history of music since the Second Vatican Council \u2013 complete with \u201cMichael Row the Boat Ashore\u201d and \u201cKumbuyah\u201d and all that.<\/p>\n

(Did you know that the Erie Benedictines, home of Sister Joan Chittister, appeared on the Ed Sullivan show in full habit to do \u2018new\u2019 music right after the council?! I hadn\u2019t.)<\/p>\n

The story takes us through the settling down and maturing and developing new traditions in the 1990s, and subsequent discussions and controversies. Complete with Thomas Day (of Why Catholics Can\u2019t Sing<\/a><\/em> fame) spouting off about whether hymns are liturgical music \u2013 I commend to him the relevant sections of the U.S. bishops\u2019 document Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship<\/em> to broaden his viewpoint a bit. (Hint: see 115d.) But he likes the new ICEL missal chants, which I\u2019m happy to see.<\/p>\n
