{"id":31817,"date":"2015-11-17T18:02:51","date_gmt":"2015-11-18T00:02:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=31817"},"modified":"2015-11-17T18:10:47","modified_gmt":"2015-11-18T00:10:47","slug":"archbishop-wilton-gregory-elected-chair-of-usccb-liturgy-committee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2015\/11\/17\/archbishop-wilton-gregory-elected-chair-of-usccb-liturgy-committee\/","title":{"rendered":"Archbishop Wilton Gregory Elected Chair of USCCB Liturgy Committee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Atlanta, George was elected chair of the Bishops&#8217; Committee on Divine Worship (BCDW) or the USCCB today at\u00a0the conference&#8217;s fall meeting in Baltimore.<\/p>\n<p>Archbishop Gregory earned a doctorate in liturgy is from Benedictine-led Sant\u2019 Anselmo in Rome in 1980. He was USCCB president 2001-2004. He has served on numerous conference committees, including as chair of liturgy (then BCL) 1991-1993. He has published numerous articles on the subject of liturgy, particularly in the African-American community. He has nine honorary doctoral degrees.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pray Tell <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2014\/03\/31\/archbishop-gregory-on-new-missal-flaws-and-difficulties-it-needs-correction\/\" target=\"_blank\">reported earlier<\/a>\u00a0on Gregory&#8217;s statement that the newly translated English Missal of 2011 has &#8220;flaws and difficulties&#8221; and &#8220;needs correction.&#8221; When asked about the new Missal at a conference in March, 2014, <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2014\/03\/31\/archbishop-gregory-on-new-missal-flaws-and-difficulties-it-needs-correction\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gregory said this<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Certainly the new translation is not\u2026 <i>[pause] <\/i>\u2026 without its difficulties. How\u2019s that for being diplomatic? <i>[laughter]<\/i> I think that what we need to do with that translation, to be perfectly honest, its imposition, <i>[correcting himself]<\/i> \u2013 it\u2019s in possession, we need to live with it for a while before we take up the task of saying, \u201cThis is not adequate to the worship needs of our church, for this reason, for that reason, for this reason,\u201d the pastors of the church have said, \u201cThis is a difficulty, that is a difficulty, let\u2019s look at it.\u201d I think what we had to do was receive it, try to live with it, and come up with a much better and informed review of its flaws and difficulties. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>What we need to do now, after a period of time of living with it, come back and say, not: \u201cWe told you so!\u201d \u2013 which I think a lot of pastors want to say \u2013 \u201cWe told you not to do that!\u201d <i>[laughter] <\/i>\u2013 but to say, \u201cIt\u2019s inadequate for this reason, that reason, this reason; we\u2019ve tried it, we\u2019ve lived with it, we think it needs correction.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Archbishop Gregory was <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2015\/10\/23\/next-head-of-usccb-liturgy-committee-gregory-or-barres\/\" target=\"_blank\">up against Bishop John Barres<\/a> of Allentown, PA, whom he defeated 124-114.\u00a0Gregory\u00a0will serve as chairman-elect for one year before beginning a three-year term as BCDW chair.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>He has published numerous articles on the subject of liturgy, particularly in the African-American community. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":29,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2},"_wpas_customize_per_network":false},"categories":[9,24],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-31817","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-bcdw-usccb","category-translation-new-missal"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
