It invites us to step into the hold of <a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/hope-travels-below-sea-level\/\" target=\"_blank\">slave ships<\/a>, into <a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/praying-for-rain-in-the-california-drought\/\" target=\"_blank\">mosques and synagogues and churches<\/a>, and into the <a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/on-the-cover-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">River Jordan<\/a>. It calls us outdoors to <a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/praying-for-rain-in-the-california-drought\/\" target=\"_blank\">pray for rain<\/a> under a cloudless California sky, and to play and be cleansed with water at a funeral in the <a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/the-rain-a-funeral-story\/\" target=\"_blank\">Catskill Mountains<\/a>. It asks us to reflect on how we invite people to the <a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/why-we-need-an-altar-call-to-the-font\/\" target=\"_blank\">waters of baptism<\/a>, how we <a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/the-water-worlds-of-john-muir\/\" target=\"_blank\">conserve<\/a> the natural gift of water, and how we celebrate the <a href=\"http:\/\/ismreview.yale.edu\/article\/water-in-the-book-of-common-prayer\/\" target=\"_blank\">seasons of creation<\/a> in the church\u2019s worship.<\/p>\n<p>Water is life-giving, but it can also be a threat to life. This issue is therefore about water as gift and mercy but also as danger and a form of wilderness.\u00a0Because of the necessity of water for all life, we cannot consider it without also paying due attention to its absence, both real and metaphorical. Water inspires song and plays a role in worship.
