{"id":31529,"date":"2015-10-09T18:12:52","date_gmt":"2015-10-09T23:12:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=31529"},"modified":"2015-10-09T18:13:25","modified_gmt":"2015-10-09T23:13:25","slug":"on-translation-the-german-language-synod-discussion-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2015\/10\/09\/on-translation-the-german-language-synod-discussion-group\/","title":{"rendered":"On Translation: The German-language Synod Discussion Group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve seen all over the web, the bishops at the synod in Rome have completed their first week of work, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/press.vatican.va\/content\/salastampa\/it\/bollettino\/pubblico\/2015\/10\/09\/0771\/01657.html\" target=\"_blank\">summaries of the discussions groups\u2019 work <\/a>have been published.<\/p>\n<p>The German-language group has in its report an interesting criticism of the overly literal, and hence misleading translation of the <em>Instrumentum Laboris<\/em> they were given. This sounds eerily like a criticism of <em>Liturgiam authenticam<\/em> on liturgical translation \u2013 but I don\u2019t know if they had that in mind or not.<\/p>\n<p>Below is my translation of the German speakers\u2019 comments, followed by the German original. I include the original because there is no such thing as an absolutely accurate translation, and all translation is interpretation. Some may wish to improve upon my translation!<\/p>\n<p>awr<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The German translation follows the Italian text rather closely, which, however, at times makes the German text often hard to understand. Reasons for this are the overly long sentences, which demand shorter sentences in German. The convoluted style also presents difficulties. In general, shorter sentences and a better structuring of the contents is called for in this. In the translation of the final texts, good style,\u00a0easy readability, and a clear line of thought is called for. The translation should not be interlinear, but rather in accord with the meaning.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Die deutsche \u00dcbersetzung folgt relativ genau dem italienischen Text, was aber bisweilen den deutschen Text oft schwer verst\u00e4ndlich macht. Gr\u00fcnde daf\u00fcr sind oft die \u00fcberlangen S\u00e4tze, die im deutschen k\u00fcrzere S\u00e4tze erfordern. Auch der verschachtelte Stil macht zu schaffen. Hier ist generell auf k\u00fcrzere S\u00e4tze zu achten und bessere Strukturierung der Inhalte. Bei der \u00dcbersetzung der endg\u00fcltigen Texte ist auf einen guten Stil, angenehme Lesbarkeit und klaren Duktus zu achten.
