{"id":3054,"date":"2010-07-10T15:02:47","date_gmt":"2010-07-10T20:02:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=3054"},"modified":"2010-12-21T00:10:54","modified_gmt":"2010-12-21T06:10:54","slug":"hymn-society-npm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2010\/07\/10\/hymn-society-npm\/","title":{"rendered":"Hymn Society, NPM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some interesting and important meetings this week.<\/p>\n<p>The Hymn Society of the United States and Canada is holding its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehymnsociety.org\/conference.html\" target=\"_blank\">annual conference<\/a> in Birmingham, Alabama. There&#8217;s truly no group of people I&#8217;d rather be with and sing hymns with. (OK, except perhaps my monastery &#8211; I have to keep in mind that some monks read this blog.) Their conference has a hymn festival every night. They draw on a wide spectrum of Christian hymn-singing traditions,\u00a0Protestant and Catholic. This is musical ecumenism at its best. The Catholic music publishers are well-represented at\u00a0these conferences. And <em>PrayTell<\/em> is working on at least a bit of coverage of the conference. I wish I could be there &#8211; but see below.<\/p>\n<p>The National Association of Pastoral Musicians is holding its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npm.org\/EducationEvents\/convention\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">annual convention<\/a> in Detroit. I&#8217;m so glad I&#8217;ll be there. There&#8217;s no group I&#8217;d rather be with and sing with &#8211; and I don&#8217;t say that about just anybody.\u00a0I&#8217;m leading an intensive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npm.org\/EducationEvents\/convention\/national\/institutes.htm\" target=\"_blank\">chant institute<\/a> before and throughout the convention. It&#8217;s all Latin chant &#8211; such a relief knowing that the texts are fixed and stable! Speaking of texts: several settings of the new Mass text,\u00a0chosen by jury from the many entries in an NPM\u00a0competition,\u00a0will be sung by the participants, who will then be surveyed on their reactions. The music for the settings can&#8217;t leave the room &#8211; unless, I suppose,\u00a0if a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stringsmusicfestival.com\/m2m\/holy.htm\" target=\"_blank\">modern-day Mozart recalls them<\/a> by heart and notates them for the public. I&#8217;ll let you know whether the music publishers also unveil a\u00a0couple dozen, or couple hundred,\u00a0new Mass settings.
