{"id":30292,"date":"2015-06-03T11:05:39","date_gmt":"2015-06-03T16:05:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=30292"},"modified":"2015-06-03T14:19:11","modified_gmt":"2015-06-03T19:19:11","slug":"rns-and-cara-catholic-growth-and-decline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2015\/06\/03\/rns-and-cara-catholic-growth-and-decline\/","title":{"rendered":"RNS and CARA: Catholic Growth and Decline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Religious News Service (RNS) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.religionnews.com\/2015\/06\/01\/catholics-fewer-receiving-sacraments-new-report-maps-changing-church\/\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nineteensixty-four.blogspot.com\/2015\/06\/global-catholicism.html\" target=\"_blank\">Global Catholicism: Trends &amp; Forecasts<\/a>\u201d released Monday by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA). \u201cNot all bodes well for the church\u2019s future as it faces major demographic and social shifts,\u201d Cathy Grossman writes.<\/p>\n<p>Some highlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Global Catholic population has grown 57% since 1980, to some 1.2 billion. Europe is only up 6%, but Africa is up 238% (more because of higher African birthrates than conversion or evangelization).<\/li>\n<li>Reception of Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation, and marrying in church is up in absolute numbers. But proportionately, not all looks so hopeful. Rate of reception of sacraments per 1,000 Catholics is declining uninterruptedly worldwide \u2013 including in Africa. And the number of parishes is up only 7%.<\/li>\n<li>Number of priests in Africa has more than doubled since 1980 \u2013 but this isn\u2019t enough to counterbalance the decline everywhere else. Worldwide, number of priests has dropped 17%. In the U.S., down 35%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not exactly heartening,\u00a0the steady drip of such studies. I wonder if my confessor would advise me to stop reading them for the sake of my spiritual equilibrium?
