\"manilacathedral\"The Vatican announced this week that Pope Francis will address the faithful gathered in the Philippines in English and not Latin as had been previously suggested.\u00a0Rappler, a news site based in Manila reported over the weekend<\/a> that\u00a0Archbishop Socrates Villegas, president of the\u00a0Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP),\u00a0said the Pope will use English in the papal Masses at the Daniel Z Romualdez Airport in Tacloban City on January 17, and at the Rizal Park in Manila on January 18.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Pope wants to reach as many and be understood by many more,\u201d Villegas told Rappler. \u201cEnglish is not the Pope’s mother tongue, but he is trying very hard to speak our language.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Pope, however, will say his Mass in the Manila Cathedral in Latin \u201cbecause priests are supposed to understand Latin,\u201d the CBCP president said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His Mass in the Manila Cathedral on January 16\u00a0is reserved primarily<\/span>\u00a0for 2,000 bishops, priests, and consecrated persons.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
