Abbot John Klassen OSB of Saint John\u2019s Abbey sent this notice today to the editorial consultants for <\/em>Worship<\/a> journal. The members of the consultants\u2019 group are <\/em>Mark Francis CSV, Max Johnson, Barbara (Vassa) Larin, Gordon Lathrop, Ruth Meyers, Mary Irene Nowell OSB, Keith Pecklers SJ, Gail Ramshaw, Anthony Ruff OSB, Don Saliers, Thomas\u00a0 Schattauer, Robert Taft SJ, and John Witvliet.<\/em><\/p>\n

\nSolemnity of the Immaculate Conception<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today I am announcing the appointment of Ms. Bernadette Gasslein to lead the acclaimed liturgical journal, Worship<\/em>, for a five year term.\u00a0 As I do so I wish to reaffirm the commitment of Saint John\u2019s Abbey to support the work of the journal which was founded in 1926 by Virgil Michel, OSB.<\/p>\n

As you can imagine, I am grateful to God for the work of the monks of this community who have served so capably as editors of Worship<\/em> over the past nine decades.\u00a0 I can\u2019t help but think of the work of Virgil Michel, the confreres who worked with him on so many different projects to launch the journal; then Godfrey Diekmann, Michael Marx, Aelred Tegels, Kevin Seasoltz, and of course, Frank Kacmarcik.\u00a0\u00a0 I name these because they are my brothers, but the work would have been impossible without the support of countless scholars, artists, and liturgical practitioners across the world.<\/p>\n

I also express my gratitude for the gifts and experience that Bernadette Gasslein brings to this important apostolate. She has very ably demonstrated her editorial leadership as interim editor for the past two years and with your support, we look forward to her continued leadership of the journal.\u00a0 In making this appointment, I do so having followed the wisdom of Saint Benedict in chapter three of the Rule \u2013 I am following your strong affirmation of Bernadette as editor<\/p>\n

I am sure you are familiar with the work of Bernadette but for the sake of the record, I include a summary CV.\u00a0 Prior to her position with Worship<\/em>, Bernadette served for twenty-one years as editor of Celebrate!<\/em>, Canada\u2019s award-winning pastoral liturgy magazine.<\/p>\n

She earned an S.T.L. in theology with a specialization in pastoral catechetics from l\u2019Institut Catholique de Paris. Her m\u00e9moire analyzed 270 Marian hymns published in Canada in English and French between 1970 and 1975; her research was published in the December 1978 issue of Le Suppl\u00e9ment<\/em>. Her articles have appeared in the National Bulletin on Liturgy, Pastoral Music<\/em>, and Envision Church<\/em>. She currently contributes a monthly column to the Prairie Messenger<\/em> and is a regular contributor to Give Us This Day<\/em>.\u00a0 Bernadette is well known as an engaging presenter and facilitator who has led workshops across Canada, and she continues to be involved in music ministry in her parish in Edmonton, Alberta. She is a member of the North American Academy of Liturgy since 2010.<\/p>\n

To conclude, let me thank each one of you for your contribution to Worship.<\/em>\u00a0 As a community we are grateful for your generous sharing of gifts.<\/p>\n
