{"id":28310,"date":"2014-11-23T09:46:17","date_gmt":"2014-11-23T15:46:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/?p=28310"},"modified":"2016-11-10T22:42:37","modified_gmt":"2016-11-11T04:42:37","slug":"canonization-and-christ-the-king-with-pope-francis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2014\/11\/23\/canonization-and-christ-the-king-with-pope-francis\/","title":{"rendered":"Canonization and Christ the King with Pope Francis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Today\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.va\/en\/news\/pope-francis-homily-for-christ-the-king-canonizati\" target=\"_blank\">celebration of Christ the King in Rome<\/a>, with the rite of canonization of six new saints by Pope Francis, is noteworthy for several reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">First, it has been noted that the <a href=\"http:\/\/rorate-caeli.blogspot.com\/2014\/11\/2012-rite-of-canonization-discarded.html\" target=\"_blank\">rite of canonization<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0has been re-reformed, after Pope Benedict had un-reformed it. You can see the booklet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/news_services\/liturgy\/libretti\/2014\/20141123-libretto-cristo-re_canonizzazione.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0Pope Benedict XIV had introduced a rite two years ago that is largely what had been done under Pope Pius XII before Vatican II. But for this morning&#8217;s canonization\u00a0the postconciliar rite of Paul VI has been, for the most part, restored. It is shorter. The three-fold petitions are now gone, along with the formulae emphasizing the authority of canonizations. And \u2013 in a new simplification not in the rite of Paul VI \u2013 the Penitential Act is now omitted, as its place is taken by the rite of canonization. The Litany of Saints is shortened and the final petitions to the Lord are gone, which is also a further simplification of Paul VI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">I suppose all this is the work of the Office of Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff \u2013 remember that Pope Francis <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2013\/09\/26\/new-consultants-for-liturgies-with-pope\/\" target=\"_blank\">replaced the entire membership<\/a> of the committee of consultants to that office in September 2013. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">I don\u2019t think the Congregation for Divine Worship would have been involved in these most recent changes to the canonization rite. So for those curious about what direction the CDW might be going, or who the <a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/index.php\/2014\/11\/22\/new-cdw-prefect\/\" target=\"_blank\">next CDW prefect<\/a> might be, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">this latest ritual simplification probably doesn\u2019t provide any clues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">A second reason why this morning\u2019s celebration of Christ the King in Rome is noteworthy is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.va\/en\/news\/pope-francis-homily-for-christ-the-king-canonizati\" target=\"_blank\">homily of Pope Francis<\/a>. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">The emphasis is on Jesus\u2019 \u201ccloseness and tenderness\u201d in bringing about his kingdom. Jesus is a shepherd who shows \u201ccare and love\u201d for his flock. He is not \u201ca king according to earthly ways\u201d who reigns by commanding, but he is obedient to the Father so that \u201chis plan of love and salvation may be brought to fulfilment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">As for Jesus, so for us. \u201cCloseness and tenderness are the rule of life for us also,\u201d Francis said. \u201cThe starting point of salvation is not the confession of the sovereignty of Christ, but rather the imitation of Jesus\u2019 works of mercy through which he brought about his kingdom.\u201d Wow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">And picking up a familiar theme of his, Francis applies this to the church\u2019s pastors. \u201cThose of us who are called to be pastors in the Church cannot stray from this example, if we do not want to become hirelings.\u201d Then the pope packs a punch with this line: \u201cIn this regard the People of God have an unerring sense for recognizing good shepherds and in distinguishing them from hirelings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">awr<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The canonization rite of Paul VI has been restored, replacing the mostly preconciliar rite Pope Benedict had brought back.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":27,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[91,2224],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-28310","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-liturgical-year","category-pope-francis"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
