Pray Tell<\/em> continues its series on the liturgical history of Collegeville. The sub-series \u201cFrom the Archives\u201d reprints some of the Liturgy Committee meeting minutes from 1963 to 1969. This sub-series is a behind-the-scenes look at liturgy in Collegeville during and immediately after the Second Vatican Council.<\/em><\/p>\n

January 13, 1965<\/p>\n

Present were Fathers John, Daniel, Godfrey, Emeric, Michael, Aelred, Brice, Wenceslaus, Leon, Mederic and Brother Gerard.<\/p>\n

The position of the tabernacle was the first main topic of discussion. Father Godfrey pointed out that when our new church was built, we had to keep the tabernacle on the altar. According to the present legislation, however, this can be changed. And even while Breuer and Smith study this problem architecturally, we could have a temporary solution.<\/p>\n

Father Michael stressed the fact that removing the tabernacle to the side would represent the effort to get greater respect for the Blessed Sacrament. At the present time the upper church is sort of a tourist spot. When confronted with a similar situation, for instance, the Abbey of Buckfast built a private chapel to their church so that the Blessed Sacrament would be more respected. As for us, the Assumption chapel should be the devotional chapel. The tabernacle upstairs would be a utility tabernacle, reservation tabernacle.<\/p>\n

Father Aelred called attention to the equivocation that exists when a static symbol (the tabernacle) is combined with a dynamic symbol that includes the whole assembly\u2014which is our case at present.<\/p>\n

Added to the significant fact that the instruction allows for the removal of the tabernacle from the main altar, places like Webster College and St. Meinrad\u2019s have already removed their tabernacles, as Fr. Michael mentioned.<\/p>\n

Father Godfrey, after this discussion, made the motion that the tabernacle be removed from the main altar and placed in the most suitable spot, which seems to be at the back of the ambulatory, at the east side. Fr. Aelred seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.<\/p>\n

Another recommendation passed unanimously was that we use whole-wheat hosts at Mass. This is in keeping with the principle enunciated in Mediator Dei<\/em> to the effect that everything around the altar should be as authentic and meaningful as possible.<\/p>\n

Regarding Ash Wednesday it was recommended that we should have a Mass for our whole community. If possible, seminarians, Prep students, college students, and monks should all attend the same Mass.<\/p>\n

Fr. Emeric lodged a complaint concerning the present location of the booklets used at Mass\u2014a location so inconvenient that students don\u2019t use them. The committee did not know what could be done about this.<\/p>\n

The committee thought that we could quietly begin implementing the decree of March 7 now, on the principle of vacatio legis<\/em>. Preliminary prayers should be omitted before daily conventual Mass, since Mass follows a liturgical function. The secret could be said out loud, with people standing for it. Monks would not have to genuflect for the last blessing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
