\u2014 The concept of having a representative body of the Church voting on doctrinal applications and pastoral solutions strikes me as being rather Protestant.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Bad word choice, that. Two problems I see with it:<\/p>\n
1. Bishop Tobin seems to be using \u201cProtestant\u201d to mean \u201cbad, something to avoid.\u201d This is not the proper ecumenical spirit. We Catholics look at Protestants and other Christians with respect for their difference from us (which are sometimes quite significant), and with an open heart for what we can learn from them. And with humility: the liturgical vision of the Second Vatican Council is closer to Martin Luther than to Trent on many points, which suggests that we aren\u2019t always right.<\/p>\n
2. Synods and gatherings and ecumenical councils have been \u201cvoting on doctrinal applications and pastoral solutions\u201d for about 2,000 years now, from the Council of Jerusalem to Nicea to Trent and ever since.<\/p>\n
For all that, I appreciate that Bishop Tobin shared his \u201crandom thoughts,\u201d and I like his open and honest spirit. His last two thoughts are very good indeed:<\/p>\n
\u2014 Pope Francis is fond of \u201ccreating a mess.\u201d Mission accomplished.<\/p>\n
\u2014 Relax. God\u2019s still in charge.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
