Last week, Gregory Wolfe, founder of <em>Image <\/em>and director of the MFA in Creative Writing at Seattle Pacific University <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/goodletters\/2014\/10\/the-saint-johns-bible-back-to-the-future\/#ixzz3FOhVZb00\">shared a compelling report<\/a>, which might be of interest.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27549\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27549\" style=\"width: 352px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/carson-newmansjb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27549\" src=\"https:\/\/praytellblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/carson-newmansjb.jpg\" alt=\"carson-newmansjb\" width=\"352\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27549\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Visitors view a display of the Heritage Edition at Carson-Newman University in Tennessee.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Wolfe gives a brief synopsis of the process undertaken by the Abbey and the <em>Bible<\/em>\u2019s artistic director, Donald Jackson, scribe to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who had a vision and dream to create the first hand-lettered and illuminated Bible in generations.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Benedictines embraced Jackson\u2019s vision. The completed\u00a0<em>Saint John\u2019s Bible<\/em>\u00a0consists of seven oversized volumes in which nineteenth-century Chinese ink, along with gold and platinum leaf, have been applied to vellum. From Genesis to Revelation there are 160 painted illuminations as well as dozens of key texts that have been visually enhanced.<\/p>\n<p>The monks knew that the project couldn\u2019t end there\u2014otherwise, they would have been accused of merely reverting to the medieval model\u2014trapping a sumptuous Bible behind monastic walls. So a hardcover trade edition quickly followed.<\/p>\n<p>What happened next, however, has made all the difference. The decision was made to produce something called the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.saintjohnsbible.org\/promotions\/heritage\/\">Heritage Edition<\/a>, a fine art version that mimics the original in almost every way, including size\u2014two feet by three feet\u2014and embossed gold and silver foil.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Wolfe recently was part of a group presentation exploring the <em>Gospel and Acts<\/em> volume of the <em>Saint John\u2019s Bible<\/em>. He related the group\u2019s reaction to the work, and his own.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What I felt at that moment was that the scripture was profoundly other\u2014beyond my control\u2014but also intensely present\u2014and I immediately noted how it bound everyone in the room together.
